So I was planning on private selling my 2012 FJ and pruchasing a 2017 TRD Pro Tacoma and I have actually already ordered the truck from a dealership here in Oklahoma but it will be about two months before it comes in. It was brought to my attention that the Tacomas are having some issues right now and really the purpose of this post is, should I hold off on the purchase or should I consider a different truck or just keep the FJ?

I have browsed around the forums a bit and it seems like some of the issues are a shimmy around 2500 RPMs and a "surge" at times with the engine. Are there others?

Here's my advice. When the truck comes in, Take it for a nice test long drive. If you have any concerns talk to the service department before you buy. If there is anything major, or you don't like the truck, then simply don't buy it.

There is a Cement Gray one at Fowler Toyota (already sold), and it is really nice in person. Just an fyi. But if you went and looked at it, you'd probably pull the trigger, lol.

@Mas Tisu haha yeah I actually saw that yesterday and talked to the owner, he is a finance manager there, and I order the truck just like that. I love the looks and features of the truck but all the issues I am seeing is kinda worrying since it is a 40K truck.

A new bolt here, a new bolt there, a new bolt everywhere.
You know how they say the squeaky wheel gets the grease...well, here it is the squeaky wheel gets the attention. So people instead on collecting similar complaints to one thread each person makes their own and then they trade complaints on each others threads so it quickly starts making the appearance that there is no good trucks. Are some of their complaints justifiable yes, are they over exaggerated on here yes as well. As stated earlier by @Lawfarin before you sign the bill of sale drive the truck. You don't need to be a master mechanic, just take the truck on the feeder and on the freeway and feel hiw it cycles through gears. Your hood shouldn't be a problem like the OffRoad editions are having. While driving on the feeder roll the window down and listen for any noise that you would not expect to hear Ex: Howling, squeaking, grinding, ect... One final thing switch you view in the dash to read out yiur MPG it seems some people are either A) getting a truck that is not meeting up to the fuel economy or B) have a lead foot and are expecting Prius MPG from a truck with the pedal to the floor. One other thing try the ECT when accelerating from a stop or from a slow rolling start, it makes the truck feel more spunky when you need to get to moving.

Just overall remember what your buying it's a Tacoma, not a Prius, not a Porsche, not a 3500 dually, and definitely not a MiniVan. It seems like some people here went out to picking lemons and then went home expecting to get orange juice out of those lemons.

Awesome thanks! I was just wondering what type of things I needed to be looking for! I know that not all of them are bad. I just want to make sure I am educated enough to know what a bad one is when I am driving it.

I traded my 2012 FJ Trail Teams in for my 2016 TRD-OFF ROAD. I don't regret a minute of it. The FJ was WAY out dated with little to no tech. The only bit that was surprising is the fuel economy is about the same, from my real world usage. I expected a bit better with the Tacoma, but other than that its been great. There are a select few members on here that are trying to hurt the sales of the Tacoma (have even stated so). I don't want to call out names but one of them rhymes with Shitty. So just learn to ignore them and carry on.

Yeah, from what little I know (I haven't had any issues with my TRD OR) You want to check the leaf springs and make sure they don't squeak or are flat. Listen to the rear and make sure it doesn't should lile a wolf howling at the moon. Lastly, drive different speed and make sure the transmission selects the appropriate gear for what your demanding. Ex: accelerating from a rolling start, check that it down shift, once your up to speed stay at a certain speed example 75mph and make sure it up shift to the appropriate gear.

Been going thru the same thing......Local dealer is getting a Cement Pro/Auto next week or so $44038+ TTL. Went down this afternoon to work out numbers with a trade for my 14 Baja. If we can come to terms with a deal, I will most def test drive it before signing on the dotted line.

I ordered a 2017 Cement Pro a while back that arrives in a few weeks. Looking forward to it.

Give it a test drive and see how it feels. Maybe they worked out some 16 issues In the 17s?

I have one allocated to me for December deliver (Barcelona MT)

Considering there are so few being produced I think more attention in assembly will happen (maybe my wishful thinking)

Im trading my 13 Tundra Plat 4x4 with the redrock interior in for it and not worrying about all the first year stuff

Definitely test drive, and don't let the salesman blab so you can concentrate on listening for unusual sounds. If it's auto, make them manually check the tranny fluid level. Just browse the threads here so you will be informed, but don't let them deter you. If it is issue free and you like it, then go with it. I would buy mine again, despite some issues that have been since fixed. I love my taco, it's a great truck!

I'd also suggest looking around. How many used 2016 Tacomas do you see for sale relative to other used 2016 trucks?

If the stated issues are as severe and widespread as hanging out here might lead one to believe, many owners would be trying to get out of their trucks. Sure a portion of those owners may be so upside down they have to just suffer in misery, but you and me and most others would find a way to get out of a vehicle we hated.

So look around and see if you discern any real difference in the number of used 2016 Tacos for sale relative to others.

My Pro is a piece of shit that can barely go down a gravel road. You don't want it.

Kidding, I haven't had any real issues. I could possibly use the tranny TSB but they say there isn't one for it. It does great off-road. I was very impressed. Crawl control is awesome as well. It makes wheeling effortless.
