I drive a lot of other trucks for work and all of them have some howl from the diff in one fashion or another, mostly on decel.

Tacoma owners tend to whine more than most. That's the difference

I have a personal theory (untested and unproven) that since the 3rd gen is so much quieter than previous gens, it allows people to notice previously "normal" or unobtrusive mechanical sounds that were masked by other, previously louder cabin and road noises.

    ...maybe? Ha.

Out of the 5 tacomas I've had and my brief history with a Silverado, NONE of them had a diff howl or any sounds like my 16 Taco does. When Toyota field reps are having diffs replaced saying its not normal, I tend to agree, a differential should not howl I love how people either say its normal and not an issue (those that don't have it) or say its people making it up. There is likely a tolerance issue causing it from the manufacturer (AISIN still I believe), give it time and they will sort it out, but it will take awhile in typical Toyota fashion, and its not normal and likely will mean long term reliability issues. The teacher dude with a DCLB had his replaced and the tech noted the gear oil was full of crap.

Nothing I've noticed. I don't have a stethoscope to every moving part like done on here though.

That is correct, there is rumors they are working on addressing what is causing the problem, I'd expect a TSB later down the road and for the change to be implemented in new models.

I wouldn't be happy either if I had all the problems I've read about on here, but my 17 is smooth and quiet. Time will tell I guess.

I sold my 2005 Dodge Ram this spring to get the down payment for my taco and when the guy bought it he said before he would buy it he wanted to talk to his mechanic friend about the sound from the rear diff because it concerned him. I knew there was a sound but I figured it was normal, I never really thought about it because it sounded like that the whole time I owned it and never gave me any problems. It had 120,000 mi on it when I sold it. Having said that, I surely hope my new taco doesn't sound like that when I pick it up next month.

    S-....sci.....science?

No idea. Because such a thing would devolve into a feces-flinging flame war of name calling and accusations about motives, genetic heritage, and intellectual comoetency. And that is just regarding what font we choose for the post on TW.

So. I will sit on my ass and blithely toss about random ideas with no factual backing other than the impetus of the beer I am drinking. And thus, we will win TW today.

    Step 3. Profit?

I am lucky so far, my Tacoma does not have the howl and if it does, I do not hear it. I have also owned a lot of other trucks (18ish) that also had no howl. Not sure why you think others howl.

all the work trucks for a company I used to work for had howling diffs, well more of a whine.

I assumed it was because the owner was a cheap cunt and didn't take care of any of the vehicles. Some went 30 000KM before getting oil changes.
