Tekonsha Prodigy Brake Controller

Anyone got this installed in their Taco? Im thinking of getting this, site says direct plug in. Want to know what, if anyone here, thinks of it and was the installation easy as mount and plug in?

 

Tekonsha makes a good product, and while I do not use this controller, (As I wanted a cleaner install, read as invisible, than is possible with the prodigy)

If you can find a suitable place to mount it in your truck you will be happy with it's performance. Yes, if you have the factory tow package it will be as simple as plug and play, not counting the fine tuning that you'll have to do with the gain and output, to get the braking dialed in to your liking.

I installed one on my '04, which is not a direct plug in, all custom wired. My understanding is the '05 and above has the plug in capability, just buy their pigtail and in plugs in to an empty plug left of the driver's foot, behind the panel. The Tekonsha rep was great help, even sent a picture...he just had the wrong year for me.

I did install the Prodigy in my 08 Taco, truck came with one side of the pigtail and controler came with the other side, I still had to splice the pigtails together...easy pickins.

The controller works just fine pullin my 16' utility trailer.

If you want the digital readout then get the P3, I didn't need a fancy readout to apply electricity to the trailer brakes.

 

SRFive, I have an 02 Tacoma Xtra Cab with the 3.4L and am going to install a P3 in a week or so. My Taco has the dealer installed hitch with 4-pin plug but I want to get an enclosed trailer with brakes, so I'm going to do basically what you did. Do you have any pictures or information that you can share regarding the process? Will I need to run all new wires for the 7-pin or is there some way I can use the 4-pin's wires? I won't be using my truck to pull trailers very often and plan on moving the P3 from my truck to my girlfriend's F150 in a month or two. I'm separating from the Air Force and need to move all of my stuff to South Carolina and want to do it in the safest way I can using my truck. Anything you can share will be a big help, thanks!

I don't know about the new P3, but I (and a few friends) was very happy with the Prodigy. I personally do not like the time delay controllers, I felt the proportional controller had a better feel. It comes down to personal preference.

 

My good friend runs his own business installing hitches, repairing trailers, and selling accessories related to the above, and he almost exclusively deals with the Prodigy brake controllers. He uses them himself (the P3, I believe) for hauling huge-arsed trailers and has never had a complaint from himself or anyone. To me, that says quality product.

 

I've got an '09, and cannot find the connector in the truck. Has it moved on this model year? Does anyone have a picture?

 

Not on the taco, but we have a Prodigy that we've used on our Grand Cherokee & Dodge Ram.
Awesome brake controller.
You adjust boost/level of braking based on the load.
It has a slider that you can engage the trailer brakes manually - which comes in handy if the trailer starts to sway.

 

I have the Prodigy controller on my 2009, as far as the connections, I do not know the dealership did it for me. I have had Prodigy's for my Duramax'x and 5th wheel plus other trailers, I needed it for my Boat trailer that has brakes. I am tall but mounted the Prodigy straight under the steering wheel does not get in my way, very happy with it.

I have a Prodigy P2 on my truck and I love it. I pull a 19ft travel trailer that weighs about 4500#'s with no problems.

 

Installed the P3 in my 06 Tacoma...
The online seller included the pigtail so install was a breeze..
Works fantastic right out of the box.

I have two of them and they have been great.
Get the plug and play.
Mine, I did the pocket mount. What I did with mine was use good 3M tape, mounted on the lower left side and just under the fuse box.
I tried several places, did not want to use up any storage areas and wanted in in an area that I could see it all the time. That was the only place that I found that worked.
What I did was used on strip of 3M tape on the pocket mount, moved it around the areas I though would work and then drove a few days.
Found it to be in the way, always hit, could not see it and so on....
Then found that area low left out of the way, could still get to it, could see it all the time, never hit it driving and moving around on a trip.
That was the key, I know a guy that mounted one to tight, moving around to shift in the seat on a road trip..... Locked up his brakes on the trailer and about lost it....
When I found the spot, I cleaned both areas, dash and pocket mount, then used 4 strips of 3M tape, stuck in place and it has not moved.
No drilling and I can remove with fishing line and a heat gun, if needed.

 

I have an '02 and installed the P3, custom wiring all the way, and bought installed a 7 pin for the trailer plug-in. Thing works great (I tow about 5500lbs, 5/6 times per year). Mine is installed in the ashtray area (I removed the ashtray, as it is useless for me)...this also puts the P3 in an easy reach area (right near the stick shift) in case of a code brown moment. You might want to check out the Prodigy wireless model. I'm sure it is more expensive, but might make the install swap out just that much easier/better.

 

You can see where I mounted my Tekonosha. Not sure what model, but it's a solid state one not mechanical. A little fiddly to mount there but not to bad & easy to pop in and out once mounted. Great spot to monitor and manipulate while driving.

 

I mounted in a similar position underneath my e-brake.
