I think you should really do some extensive research on getting a jeep.
Because if you haven't noticed ever since fiat Chrysler bought jeep their reliability hasn't been the same. They are rated very below average and jeep is now one of the least reliable brands you can buy.

Just look at the transmission problems with the new Cherokees, the fiats transmission problems, the dodge darts, etc. which are all under fiat Chrysler,
Ram. Jeep. Fiat. Chrysler. All the same brand. And if you research all of their cars individually you will notice that all of them have a constant aray of problems.

No, we love Jeeps but since we got a Toyota and experience quality and reliability, we are happier now!

When you drive a Tacoma you feel more comfortable. With a jeep by 30K you need to replace rear brakes, ball joints,PC valve, clockspring etc. I too love jeeps because their fun,but not anywhere near the quality of a taco.

I was in the same boat about 2 months ago. Drove a TRD Off Road and a Wrangler Unlimited Willy's Edition. My experience was that there were larger incentives to buy a Wrangler, but Tacoma was kinda, here is the price. That being said, the Tacoma had better features (creature comforts) and had all the off road toys. At the end of the day, the Tacoma was the choice for me because it was better all around imo. More comfortable, and just felt more modern.

    Workin' on it....
I was just at the Northwest Offroad Expo and I have to say the Jeeps did seem to be more capable in the offroad obstacle course than most of the Toyotas which just had too long a wheel base for the obstacles presented. That said, considering built jeeps with 40" + tires and massive articulation were getting stuck, I'm not that hardcore. I just put on around 3200 miles on my Taco over a week and it was a great trip.....don't think I'd feel the same way cramped in a jeep for 970 miles in one day.

The taco while not the most "hardcore" offroad vehicle just does everything well and that is a big plus.

which is odd because back in the old country Fiat is actually really reliable.
My family back home have 5 different tractors from Fiat,(they're all a bunch of farmers in northern italy) including 3 cars. All very reliable no issues
Oldest tractor we have in my family is 40 years old. Other than general maintenance its just been going strong.

I work with a few guys that are die hard jeep fans and they all say the same. The 4L staight six was the best engine jeep ever used.
    The new engines are garbage.

I was thinking the jeep as well like OP at one point, figure solid axles are usually better off road so was considering it.
But after looking at them at the dealer just not worth it.
I need a bed for home renos and side jobs and the bed would be great for camping. Jeep is probably a better off road crawling vehicle from factory but Tacoma is a much better touring/camping vehicle.

And for daily driving and affordability, the Taco is better. Cheaper on insurance and much safer on the road. And in the city where I live...no one can drive. I found out why today. Watched a DRIVING INSTRUCTOR, take 5 minutes to back out of a spot. How can someone that cant even back out of a parking spot teach people how to drive? And no it wasn't a student just the one guy in the vehicle. So no one knows how to drive in this city. I see accidents every day and many of them are idiots not paying attention texting and running red lights and hitting someone. So as much as I hope nothing happens to my truck, I'd much rather have something that is safe in an accident.

Right now I'd try to hold off until there is more info on the upcoming next gen Wrangler pickup, that might be awesome. And I wouldn't be surprised if it has side air bags.

Yeah I agree. The Wranglers are awesome, and purpose built off road vehicles. The downside though is that's how they feel on road as well. I felt the TRD OR was a good blend between off road capability and day to day livability.

Fiat actually is credited for inventing variable valve timing which most modern engines use today.

And that was your daily trivial fact, brought to you by: a guy about to go to sleep.

I have NEVER heard anyone say "Fiat" and "reliable" in the same sentence, unless there was a "not" in between. I think when you look up "unreliable" in a dictionary, you see a Fiat's logo. Fiat is just about as bad as any western make of a car. To get any worse than a Fiat, you'd have to look at a Lada or some other POS like that (some models of Lada were ripped of a Fiat, which explains a lot too).

Do you want the window down and hair blowing with leg propped up on the rail - buy a Jeep. If you want the wind blowing and all most sme feeling but with more room get the 2017 which has the electric window the back. I was quoted I could roughly get a standard 4x4 SR5 for 32k and I paid the 2k extra for the 2016 TRD OR.

I had a 2012 2DR Wrangler Sport so the base model really and I absolutely loved it. The only problem I ever had was the left head replacement under warrenty and it took two days. In the 3 years I owned it, it never saw a mechanic other than that. I got 18-19 mpg on average with the JK on 33's and heavy bumpers and winch. I live down here in Florida too and had a blast going out in the sand and the trails we have up here in the panhandle. I switched to a 2016 SR5 4x2 4cyl because I had a baby girl and needed the extra doors and get rid of the temptation to mod it and I love it so far. I'm getting 22ish right now with the Tacoma. I will probably go back to a wrangler when my kid is out of a car seat. I paid $26K for the wrangler brand new with TTL and got a 6cyl 4x4. It cost me $30K with TTL for the new Tacoma.

My little 5 lug takes a lot of abuse and honesty tacomas have earned my trust. I watch the top gear to kill a toyota truck whenever I think about other cars or trucks.

My parents bought a new jeep 4x4 and it had 2 engine rebuilds and tranmission issues. There are far more lemons in the jeep area then the toyota area from what I here. Toyota had earned my trust for life for this truck but for the next, and the next, and if my engine dies on me ill buy another.
