3/16 with some good bracing on the inside (welded angle iron) will probably be as tough as 1/4. However it'll take more time to build.

Check out the @Mobtown Offroad skids, I think the difference between 1/4 and 3/16 is about 70# that was an easy trade-off for me. And you can always reinforce the 1/4 if you somehow bend it.

If you're bending the 1/4" steel I want to see the clip on when you did it haha.

Does your trans skid have any reinforcement or is it just bent up on the sides and flat in the middle like RCI's. I don't care if it's 3/16 or 1/4. If it's flat and not reinforced in the middle, it's going to bend if hit hard enough. At RC, there's a good chance it'll get hit hard enough.

I never got a chance to check out your skids at RC last time. I'm hoping they're better built than the ones I bought. Well, the trans skid anyway. I'm pretty happy with the rest of them.

Are they flat or reinforced? Maybe I'll see them at RC one time.

What's the added reinforcement you're adding?

    I like angle iron

    1x1x1/8" I think I used, I'd have to look....

    Also they are still straight

This is how we fixed mine. As you can see from Lloyds banana like aluminum skid, 3/16" steel is much better than aluminum. 1/4" is obviously a little better than 3/16". About 1/16" better actually Lol!

IMO it's gusseting and reinforcements that make the biggest difference. Just like anything else. An X pattern on 1/4" skids? Perfect. IMO an X pattern on a 3/16" skid would be strong enough without adding unnecessary weight.

Look at the pic of my skid. The problem with RCI, other than the lack of reinforcement, is that the side bend ends inches before where it bolts on. Guess where it bent? They did this because third gens have lines that run through there or something... Of COARSE it's going to bend. I was very unimpressed with that particular skid.

Ours are very different in the fact that they work with a dif drop. So they sit a touch lower. And ours our wider to cover as much as physically possible.

I agree, I think 1/4" will bend if it's Spanning the cross members and not reinforced
