Quick question. When would it be appropriate to set 5100s at 2.5?

Shit bolted onto other shit, and junk.
I'm sure there is a reason out there, but I would recommend against it ever. Preloading the coil is what you are doing in order to gain ride height. This comes at the cost of the coil travel. The higher the setting, the more compressed or stored energy there is to maintain the higher lift height. The coil can only compress so much. In addition, the compression energy increases exponentially in the coil thus not providing a very smooth compression when you do hit a bump or compress the suspension. The lack of ability of the coil to trvel and compress is transfered back to your butt dyno, aka spine.

Not to mention, stock coils are also progressively coiled making this factor even more pronounced than a linear coil like eibach or OME.

I wouldnt recommend it. Not a show stopper but wouldnt ride very nice and probably transfer a lot of harsh energy to other parts of the suspension.

I have no plans on doing it. I've just been looking at all the lift options and everybody recommends against it so I was just wondering why it's even a option.

You have 2 options as explained by Marie over @HeadStrong Off-Road. Both options include getting new springs. You can do OME 888 Springs and set the 5100s to 0...will be close to 2.5" or OME 887 set to .85 setting for 3".

IT IS NEVER RECOMMENDED TO USE THE 2.5 SETTING

I understand this is why I was asking why it is an option? I'm not even considering it. I don't want a rough riding truck. I'm just curious if it's so bad why does Bilstein offer it. I guess for the people that don't mind doing stupid stuff.

It's not that it isn't recommended you can totally do this if you would like (using stock coils). I have several customers who have gone this route, it is just that the ride quality, from the feedback I have received, tends to be on the stiffer side.

For clarification regarding preloading (adjusting the 5100s) with lift coils:
The factor that needs to be considered when doing this is the compressed length of the coils. At the 0.85 setting the compressed length is not an issue even with the taller coils (887 & 888), its just not recommended because a lift coil already has a higher spring rate (when compared to the factory 2nd gen coils) and so additional preload will just make the ride even stiffer. For the 3rd Gens the additional stiffness for more preload is offset with the additional weight of the truck, so some with 3rd Gens will choose this option, the 0.85 setting, and very much like the quality of ride.

It's never recommend to use the .85 setting with lift coils, either.

    Yet there you are.
