The clutch in my '05 Tacoma started slipping pretty bad when I was backing up. Today I was driving uphill on a mountain road and smelled clutch when I pulled up to a stop sign. The clutch has around 105k on it, which seems low to me, but I bought the truck used and never saw the previous owner drive it, so who knows what it's been through.

Does anyone know a good replacement clutch? Right now I'm waiting to get an estimate from a shop, but the last one quoted me $900 for an aftermarket oem-style clutch and it's looking like factory clutches are crazy expensive. I've replaced clutches before on older trucks, but right now doing it myself would mean doing it outside in the dirt with no transmission jack and hoping it doesn't rain...I can do it, but it's gonna suck. Can anyone who has replaced a clutch on our trucks or had one replaced chime in? Any advice would be much appreciated. Is a URD clutch really going to work better or last longer than an Aisin clutch with a stock 4.0L engine?

One more thing to add, the clutch/tranny were replaced under warranty at 59k miles. Any idea if this would make a difference?

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
I'd stick with the Aisin (OEM) clutch. $200 - $300 for an OEM clutch kit isn't a bad price

I agree on oem clutch also replace pilot bearing and get a new flywheel or get the old one cut. Not a time to try and save by using cheaper parts..........good luck, do it yourself...If you buy a cheap trans jack from harbor freight it will still be way less than having it done at a shop.

Any idea if LUK flywheels are any good? I can order one with the Aisin clutch for an extra $77, which would let me get the job done all at once. I don't have access to a secondary vehicle at the moment. Also does anyone know what the difference is between the CKT-057 and CKT-055 clutch kits is? Rockauto lists both for the 05 Tacoma, with the 057 being up to '09 only and costing $50 more.

I checked the paperwork that came with the truck and the flywheel has been resurfaced before, and the mechanic I talked to said it's best to replace it then. I'm either looking at buying a used one and paying a shop to resurface it, or buying a LUK for $100. The only reason I'm concerned about the LUK one is it's only $100 shipped, and the only other aftermarket flywheel I can find is Sachs for $220. I'm not sure what the difference is between them, but the price is enough to make me wonder.

Do you plan to keep the truck for awhile? If so, because it takes a certain amount of labor to replace these parts, I'd buy the best thing I could afford to ensure it will work and last awhile.
