Oh and if your primary concern is .6 miles vs 4 miles, I recommend reading 14 CFR 101 & 107 of the US Code for the definition of "maintain visual line of sight." Last thing the industry needs is *another* guy with a quad flying way out of sight for some "wicked cool shots bro"

Understand where you're coming from. .6 miles just doesn't seem as appealing to me since I'm located in the mountain range here in Kentucky. I feel like keeping site of a drone going across a "Holler" would need a little more distance that .6 miles, if I'm close to a few hundred feet in the air. I have no need for 4 miles but I feel if the GoPro was just 1.5-2 miles, I would feel way better about it. With your last comment, the simplicity of the GoPro Karma is nice, but also isn't. I like having the freedom to do a little more control with the Mavic. I'm new to flying these things, but I've been eyeing and researching them for awhile now. If it wasn't for the extra camera, the Mavic would be a complete no brainer for me. Especially since filming is my background.

That's close! If I was single I would be all over this! But right now I work a 20 on 10 off, and salary is a wee bit better. Plus good bonuses. I will put the word to a few of my friends that fly and aren't quite in the position I am in. Thank you for getting back on that!

My Cousin was asked to do the aerial shots for this run at Rausch creek, I thought it turned out pretty nicely.

All this speak of $X000 quads....

I'm looking at a few cheap Eachines for me. It should bind to my old Spectrum Tx and price point is peanuts compared to the big ones. I'd like to get my feet wet on a smaller cheaper rig before dropping the coin on a larger one.

The Inductrix can bind to DSMX gear. The BNF version is something like 60 or so.

The inspire looks like a really nice drone. Seems like a PITA to lug around though.

I sold my Inspire 1 V2 a little over a month ago with the intention of buying the Mavic. They are so backordered right now it might be mid Jan. before you can get your hands on one. Might be a good idea to wait until it's been out for a couple of months to get past the teething issues that they have. I'm on the DJI forums and I "personally" wait to load any new firmware upgrades until they are tested by the community. The Mavic looks like a promising craft though and I'm looking forward to getting one.

You can probably pick up a Inspire 1 for a pretty good price right now since they announced the Inspire 2. It is a very nice craft and other than the issue you brought up it served me well for a year. But you are correct, it is a pain in the ass to lug around. That said... it isn't a craft that is meant to be extremely portable. It's meant to take cinema quality video and that it does very well. So it's a trade off whether you want portability or quality 4K video with less compression.

For me... I want the portability. When I can throw the drone in my camera bag along with my DSLR and lenses then it is worth the trade off. The Mavic takes great 2.7K video and that should be the optimum setting for the craft. 4K is pretty highly compressed on the Mavic.

I agree. What you sacrifice in image quality (and let's be honest, it isn't much) you more than make up for in portability and ease of use. The only good camera is the one you actually use.

Originally they were backordered though the middle of Dec. I wouldn't look for them to be available on Jan 9th. There are people that have paid (on the DJI forums) as soon as the Mavic was announced and they still haven't received their craft. So with that said, the people that have paid and are on the waiting list will be filled first. I would look in mid Jan through Feb before you could feasibly get your hands on one. Who knows though? You might get lucky.
