Recently my transmission started acting up in my 2000 taco 3.4l 4x4. it has 167xxx miles on it so this was much to my surprise. It would sometimes switch into neutral when at a stop and it took some revving of the engine to get it back into gear. The problems first showed up about a year ago, while driving it would start to erratically shift gears. the rps would start bouncing up and down. i topped it off with some fluid, didn't work. i thought maybe it was time to change the fluid as well as the filter, i did that. didn't have a problem for awhile but over the last few months it started really acting up. switching into neutral, and the most recent occurrence was when it didnt want to go into reverse. i eventually got it to work but decided i couldn't wait any longer to get this fixed. took it to my trusted mechanic and explained the problem. he said before i leave it with him or have it checked out to add an additive to see if that could help. i just added lucas oil anti slip additive today and so far has fixed the problem. figured i would write this up in case anyone else runs into a similair problem as i couldnt find any info regarding my exact issue. i will keep it posted if anything changes.

Sounds like a trans rebuild is in your future. Those additives are generally a band-aid fix and don't last.

Thats what im afraid of. Any idea as to how to tell? because it seems a bit too early (being at 167xxx miles and not 200,xxx or more) for one? is there anyother way to tell?

How much was the rebuild bill? What did you go with? A brand new one or rebuilt insides?
