Somewhere in here someone mentions talking to Airflow and they do not recommend a pre-filter, as they say it is not needed and you end up losing the benefits of the RAM air effect. I for one will only use it in the winter for snow driving. Or if I end up in a very dusty area.

Let me try to explain my thoughts on this. For all intents and purposes, these pre-filter are not a restriction until you get past a certain cfm of airflow. Now, imagine you are running in a very dusty environment. Desert for instance. With either a snorkel with the scoop or even stock intake location you will be sucking up a ton of fine particulates that will be clogging your air filter. If enough gets into the filter, it will reduce airflow through the filter dramatically, possibly to the point of reducing engine efficiency and power. Now with either of these pre-filters, the contaminants would be filtered out before entering the snorkel, keeping your air filter cleaner, and allowing you to keep driving instead of having to stop and swap out your filter. The above response from Mr Williams sounds very much like a "cover their ass" response. And when he talks about loss of performance, he is talking about losing the benefit of the RAM air effect from the scoop.

We do believe. With an adapter of sorts. ARB is also a 3-1/2" inlet as far as we know.

Will do. He gave you an upside of longer engine life...Sounds like a pretty nice benefit tho:p:cheers:

Does anyone know what cfm the snorkel is rated?

Right, I don't believe these models fit the snorkel perfect, it is more about picking the one for appropriate air flow and then making them fit

A 3-1/2" unrestricted tube is rated for way more cfm than our engines will ever be abke to use. The air filter and pre-filter are the issues to worry about. Size the pre-filter for the cfm requirements of your particular engine, which was covered earlier.

And I believe my engineer friend said he would look into figuring out how many cfm the snorkel could handle........cough Ryan cough...

Just tossing my two cents. I noticed there is a lot of concern about cfm. Keep in mind that if the precleaner you choose is too free flowing it won't create a proper vortex.

After doing a trip out west and going through a bunch of filter(even had one so clogged it popped a check engine light) I decided to get a snorkel and a precleaner. I originally tried using a 9.75 inch full view style I had off an old John Deere tractor. It was too large and didn't do squat and filter was just as dirty as the normal scoop. Did a little research and went with this 7 inch diameter one off eBay as a test and it works amazing.
    http://m.ebay.com/itm/Compatible-4x...39-39-Inlet-/181886120889?txnId=1538329509008

At higher rpm you can hear the air being sucked in and it even collects stuff during normal blacktop driving. After a 400 mile trip down extremely dusty roads in Canada there was about an inch and a half of sand in the bowl and the filter had some dirt but it was still surprisingly clean.

Sorry to derail the thread I saw some posts about people crunching numbers on airflow and just didn't notice anyone talking about too much airflow. Also I have not noticed any difference in performance of gas mileage as well as my friend running the same prefilter and hilux Safari snorkel on his 4.0 v6 Tacoma. Just wanted to pass on my experiance.

Thanks for giving use your experience. I did not mention about going too big, but I believe I did say to choose the proper pre-filter based on engine requirements.

Small update. The ram interface is 88mm/80mm OD/ID. Also the airflow of the snorkel is not the limiting factor. The airflow is limited by the air filter and the exhaust. Hopefully more updates later today for shipping and more discounts. After that gets cleared up, I think we are good to go

Update: I was able to talk them into free shipping, the only problem is they cannot drop ship each pre filter to a different location and still maintain the discount and free shipping.... So I'm working on figuring out what to do with that, not sure if there will be a way around the small shipping fee, any ideas will be considered

Yes for local guys it's easy, but there's ppl on the list from all over...so I think my only option is to get them sent to me and I ship them out to ppl, which really sucks for me.

Update from the director of aerodynamics:

Maximum =600.349334 cfm for the snorkel.

Optimum is 388.461334 cfm for reduced turbulence and increased efficiency
