Just got a call.....All the cabins are spoken for except one, even the one we THOUGHT we were getting. Only ONE left. Biggest one they have. Sleeps up to 20 people. $220 a night. So....We're now staying at a VERY cool hotel about 10 minutes away from Harlan Campground (Putney trailhead) It's the "Benham School House Inn" in Benham. It was a high school and elementary school built in 1926 by a steel company that was essentially owned by International Harvester. It was a company school for coal camp kids that worked for the steel company. It closed in 1992 and was converted into a hotel/restaurant. Room with single king bed is just $79 a night. Phone # is 606 848 3000. Free breakfast.

Hey guys, I'm new to the Tacoma world. I live in Georgetown/Lexington area. I'd like to try one of these trails or trips with you all some time. I have a stock truck as of now. I was wondering if anyone has suggestions of modifications and supplies for these trips?

I just found the basic trip sticky on here. But if you have anything extra or more in depth that'd be even better.

If you're going with experienced off roaders, they'll usually have most of what it takes to make certain you get in and out in one piece. I'm talking about recovery gear, etc....But you eventually want to get that stuff for yourself. (ie, tow straps, chains, shackles, etc.) It's advisable to carry some basic hand tools, a fire extinguisher can be a life saver in the rare instances where they're needed. First aid kit is a good thing. Flash light(s). If you're really getting adventurous, spare parts, etc....

Food/snacks, water/drinks.....extra clothes can be handy if it gets cold OR if you get really muddy (these things happen!)

Mods? Oh boy....Where do we start?

We have 2 trips planned in the near future that are open to anyone. Feel free to join in. One is October 21/22/23 at Black Mountain Off Road Adventure Area, in Harlan Kentucky. We'll be hitting the trails on Saturday morning, leaving from the Putney Trail head. We'll be on easy trails for the most part.

Also, a 1-day trip to Tennessee Dirt Devil just west of Franklin Tennessee. That's November 12th. You are welcome to come along. This one is perfect for stock vehicles.

I've got one more trip planned this fall, but it's a very limited participation type of trip. 4 of us in 2 vehicles, all 4 family members.

From there, it's just spur of the moment trips until spring when we start it all over again!

@Priv16 Come to Black Mountain next month. Should be a fairly laid back trail run. Get out and stretch the legs on that '16.

Welcome! I live in Richmond work in Lex. Your stock truck will highly surprise you on some of the places you can go. If you don't care to use your truck as a truck then be ready to get a few tree limb scratches down the side. Of course they'll buff out but they're going to come when you go offroad. Most of the trips are what you make of them, easily scenic, or hard. Other than your camping equipment/recovery gear you will want to pack, mods usually start at smaller lift/tires are a must for most guys. After that, it depends on what money you want to spend where, and how much money you have lol. Body armor such as skids, bumpers, etc. you name it. For a cheaper fun mod to have on some meets, pick you up a CB radio. That way you can enjoy the experience chatting back and forth with the people you're riding the trails with. After you meet some guys and experience what you'll need/want, say bye bye to your bank account.

    There will be more opportunities.

Black Mountain trip still has room for more.

I'm not sure if I'm ready for black Mountian yet. Considering I've never really had mine on trails, I am shooting for getting everything done before the end of the year no that I have a study income im saving hard. Probably going to buy the shocks and AAL next month, then the tires, shooting to have it all on before the snow comes (it it comes this year lol)

You'll have to be the judge of when you're ready.....But.....When we took this same trip LAST YEAR, we went with 3 trucks that were very close to out-of-the-box stock. Black Mountain is mostly rock. This time of the year it is dry and dusty for the most part. Just about any tire will perform adequately. We'll be on green and blue trails (marked with color coding as "beginner" and "easy") There are a few places where it pushed the "easy" rating to the limit, but nothing too dramatic.

That is the part that I'm not settled with quite yet.. I will think about it for a few, I'll put in my final decision when I decide. :)

Rocks are a blast. Technical and require you to pick your line rather than just following muddy ruts.

I think you'll be very surprised how well a stock truck will do. We have several stockish trucks come to the LBL meets and they do fine and generally leave surprised with how well their trucks performed.

Why aren't we using the actual meet thread lol

I really like @beertimecontinuum setup. It involves his profile pic. A jacked up truck to hang your hammock 12 ft high in a tree!!

I usually crawl in the topper and use a sleeping pad and a few sleeping bags thrown in the bed of my truck. I'll be using the same setup at Black Mountain except I'll be sleeping on my bed drawers this time. Hopefully find a cheap futon mattress to toss in there. I did use a tent this March at LBL and it was pretty nice. I don't own a tent though and can't rent from school anymore.
