I am having repeated problems with my pistons misfiring. All of the coils, spark plugs, and wiring are less than year old. Compression tests have come back fine. I have put around 6 bottles of fuel injection cleaner into it this year. I have taken my truck to two different mechanics (who cleaned the fuel injectors) and they are unable to fix it. They can only clean things up and tweak it a bit to get it running smoothly. But a couple months later, it comes back. It idles rough and the acceleration is really inconsistent.

If it isn't the injectors, plugs, coils, or wiring, then what the hell is it?!?!?

    Thanks for your time,

    Mike

I don't think it's the plug wires as they were replaced 6 months ago.

When was the last time the fuel filter was changed? MAF cleaned? Fuel pressure checked?

    Hey Ben,

The MAF is not that old and has been cleaned recently. Not sure about the fuel filter/pressure. I'll have to go back through my mechanic receipts and see if it has been replaced recently.

Did you have the issue prior to the plug/wire change? What plugs did you use?

Have you had the timing checked?

I have had the issue four separate times. In those times, certain plugs and coils were replaced. Can't remember what kind of plugs were put in. Eventually, all the coils and plugs were replaced. The wires were just recently replaced 3 months ago. I believe the timing checked out. The last mechanic that looked at it was stumped because, according to him, he ran every diagnostic check he knew of and everything came back okay. About a year ago, the compression tests came back a little low (150psi), but that has been resolved. The mechanic even got his buddy to come look at it and he had 20 years experience working at a Toyota dealership.

So as it stands now (according to the feedback I've gotten), I am going to check when/if the fuel filter has been changed out and what type of spark plugs are in there.

My truck has 253K on it. I was gunning for 300K. Looks like I am not going to make it. Really bummed about that. I was hoping to buy a new car and keep my Tacoma as a beach, camping, mountain truck. My dreams are crumbling!!!!

If you have anything Bosch (coils, wires, or plugs), change it out with Denso or NGK.

Are those the only codes you are getting?

Thanks. I looked through all my auto garage printouts and those were all the codes that came up throughout the last year.

Make sure you are using twin ground plugs, only use NGK or Denso on toyotas (other brands dont work to well in yotas). Also make sure all your vacum lines are not leaking or blown/slipped off. MAF sensor could be a possibility but unlikely, you could do a ohm test on it with the wire coming from the ecu to eliminate any though of that. An ohm test on the plug wires would also verify that they dont have any short in the inside of the wire if you want to check each plug wire individualy

What exactly do they "tweek" to get it running smoothly?
