just wondering why my brake fluid was green?

I thought it was just dirty but after replacing master cylinder and doing a full system flush with new fluid I realized the old fluid wasn't dark because it was dirty but that it was dark green in color looking more like 2 cycle oil then clear brake fluid.

I know people have said that dealers are prone to use colored fluids to tell if owners replace fluids but I just never saw green brake fluid before????????????????

my truck was from texas originally, then spent time in mississippi if that means anything

the brake fluid the factory puts in is light straw colored

    like all usual brake fluid

green could be dye used in mineral oil fluids (which would be bad)

green could be broken down fluid and metal brake system parts

    ---
    GREEN=old

    thats all.

    flush it out

well the master cylinder had a slide issue going on with it randomly binding at times and a stuttering type slippage to get past it if you stand on the pedal so broken down fluid and metal brake system parts sounds the most plausible then since there was no evidence of any rust in the system or any leaks anywhere

    Yeah
Green looked a little weird to me too. When I bled the system after doing the front brakes, this is what came out:

The fluid in the reservoir had a slight green shade to it. The green color comes from copper in the brake plumbing. Time to bleed the system.

ya, mine was even worse, dark green like 2 cycle motor oil, not even as transparent as yours looks

I did a google search for "dark green brake fluid" and it seams lots of people are running into finding this green fluid and freaking out

    Keakar,

I see a new master cylinder in your future when I gaze into my crystal ball.

There is some brake fluid that is green, I believe it is DOT 4 or higher temp stuff but it's usually only used in "race" cars and such. Can't imagine someone would put that in a Tacoma

already done but its still having the random hard pedal issue at times that returns to normal only if i stand on the pedal, then it works fine for a while, so I guess its the brake booster, not sure what else it could be?

I think you are thinking of DOT 5 fluid which is blue, DOT 3 and DOT 4 is clear.

Harley motorcycles and I think some European import cars use that blue DOT 5 stuff

Next time drain into a mountain dew bottle, you won't even notice the off color :)
