It's refreshing to see this thread. So many awesome people deal with depression, anxiety, addiction, and/or suicide. I have been affected by all of these and even more so after my Dad's cancer diagnosis and subsequent death. The important thing to remember is that we all matter, the struggle IS real, and that there are options. Most importantly, this subject matter is OK to talk about. We must talk about it. This does not make us less equal, it does not make us 'defective' or broken beyond repair. What so many do not realize is that most humans struggle with some form of the above mentioned mental health conditions. Stay strong. Life is difficult. Get the help and support you need to make the best of you life. Oh, and it helps owning a Tacoma!

the amazing thing about people even if it's people that you don't know and having friends and a network to help you cope and deal with depression and anxiety if I did not have my friends this thread I would have been a basket case as I went into depression and had the anxiety because of a bad relationship break up that was toxic. Hang in there we are all here for you and always remember you're never alone.

I have depression issues and choose to deal with it by myself. I don't want to take any drugs for it, I don't even want to inform my doctor... the first question will be 'why'....

I'm a loner and have a few friends that I do things with, but I'm usually by myself. I don't want them to feel my lack of positive energy...

So most of my hobbies are individual effort types so I don't have to rely on anyone else... mtb, road cycling, some jogging, guitar, vtec prelude, yzf600 moto... but I don't even feel like doing some of them when I'm not feeling well... just stay at home and surf the net or watch tv...

I can relate to a lot of what you said and wonder if I could do more to have less anxiety/depression. I find exercise does wonders for me and is my way of self medicating, but at times I still find it hard to get through some days.

Most people with severe depression will drop everything and do nothing... I find that the sporting activities takes my mind off all of the issues that I have,,,,, but it is only temporary as when your done, reality eventually kicks in at some point. The exercise gives you an adrenaline boost and you get a 'runners high' with the release of endorphins, but it is short lived.

I know one thing, I'm in pretty good shape from all of the exercise (For an older guy too). Went from 178lbs a few years ago to my current weight of ~160.

Holy smokes man, this exactly what I have! I started noticing problems with IBS towards the very end of 2015, and by march of 2016 I had witnessed my first panic attack since I have been alive on this earth. I am currently still struggling with anxiety on a daily basis, but my IBS is starting to clear up, and I am making it a point to solve my issues head-on. Hope you are doing better!

for me sometimes when I get depressed it stems from fear. I dwell on my situation and the longer I dwell the more depressed / worried I can become. Doing things for others helping out gets me away from myself.

How can I convince someone that they should seek psychiatric help? Just the mention of it attracts a very emotional response (you don't love me etc) and even a suggestion by their doctor does not help. I feel like I'm at wits end with this and having dealt with it for years not sure how much longer I can or am willing to help.

Been dealing with depression. Lost my Dad in Jan 2016 and was forced to retire in June 2016. First Holidays without Dad etc. I am currently taking two medications for depression. I have real good Family and Friend support but still a lot of noise in my head late at night.

You asked one of the toughest questions about psychiatric problems or relationships in general. I'm no one to give advice, because I question how I deal with my own "stuff", basically working out and getting outside in nature is like taken medicine for me. We can want certain things for the people in are life, but we can't make them do it. It sounds like you are a great father and love them so much, as to make what you want for them happen, but only they can do it and want to make the changes to get better.

I hope this holiday will be better than the last and what you desire for your love ones happens, for you and them. ~ God bless you and your family.

Google "deep muscle relaxation". Be sure to use quotes. It helps to reduce anxiety.

I myself am very lucky to not have any anxiety/depression. I do know; however, what it is like to be in a relationship where the partner is depressed. It's one of the most saddening things at times and it can really get into your head if you let it. A lot of unexplainable events can happen which can make you take stress out on yourself. It may even rub off on you which is extremely harmful to the relationship. I've been in the relationship for over a year now. I realized she would get sad sometimes, but I thought nothing of it considering everyone does. She told me around 5 months in that she was medically depressed and had been battling it for some time now. To be honest, it caught me completely off guard. I didn't know what to say considering I had never dealt with such. If someone is in the same situation, the one advice I can give is to be patient. It makes a world of difference, especially to your partner. It can be hard sometimes because let's face it no one wants to see someone be sad. Not to mention, they can say things that can be taken offensively. I'm proud to say my partner has been off of her medication for a few months now. She explained that our relationship has resolved most of her past conflicts and she is at peace. Be patient and kind, but more importantly be there to support them.

Yes, it is very difficult to be in a relationship with a person with clinical depression. If they want therapy, the best thing to do is see a behavior therapist/cognitive behavior therapist. Research shows these therapies are as or more effective than drugs. PM me if you need to know more.
