Its surprising what any 2WD vehicle can do. I grew up in a small town less than fifty miles from the Canadian border in the mountains whete we had pretty nasty winters and muddy springs. Most of us youngsters drove 2wd cars and trucks year around. That includes back country hunting, fishing, playing, and generally thrashing vehicles where they shouldn't go when they shouldn't go. What else are ya gonna do in a small town? Honestly we learned to drive better than most folks. But we also learned to work a shovel to escape our mistakes and to keep a pair of boots in the vehicle because sometimes it was a long cold walk out. :)

All that snow is a wonderful form of insulation believe it or not.

One of these makes it all worth it.

Converted to 4WD DD VW MK6 TDI

And this is why I converted haha

It went pretty well. The main reason I converted over buying a 4x4 is because its difficult to find one where I live, they are expensive and I didn't have the time to sell the truck, be car less and buy another. Another main reason is the fact I like to wrench. I like to learn how things work. This is not something to take on if you don't have enthusiasm for learning the conversion itself.
I don't have exact number in my head but had I not ruined a set of bearings then payed for install, it woulda been around 1100.

Where I live, yes, 4x4 is needed. I'm 45 min from the summit of a mountain and my house sits at 4,500 ft elevation. 2wd is okay if you stick to paved, cleared roads, but where I am, the plow comes late (if you don't do it yourself) and if you want to get out of the driveway, you'll need a 4x4.
