    While I was at the dealership today where I bought my Tacoma having my 6 month service done, I was walking the lot killing time looking at new trucks and saw this;
    TEC.jpg
This was an added sticker on every new 2017 Tacoma, Tundra and 4Runner. WTF! Add an extra 3k to MSRP just because, are they crazy? I asked a salesman about this add on and all he did was smile, I said what supply and demand, again just a smile.
While I was looking at a leftover blue 2016 Tundra Limited, a salesman asked if I was interested in the truck? I told him no, I was there having service work done on my Tacoma Limited. He said they had great deals on the remaining 2016's let's just run some numbers, I would be surprised. I told him I didn't want or need to sell my truck, however for the right number everything I own is for sale. He asked what I wanted for my truck, I reminded him of my comment about selling my truck, and I said I wouldn't take anything less than 40k (MSRP when I bought it was $46,255 not that I paid that) for it. Don't even waste your time if you can't get to that number at least.
So, the Tundra had a MSRP sticker price of $51,817, he had the info on my truck, and off to see the sales manager he went. He came back a short time later and this was their offer; out the door my truck and me writing a check for just under 19k! They wanted full sticker price for the Tundra, no discount, and only offered me $34,500 for mine. I about fell out! I reminded the salesman not to waste his time if they didn't offer me at least 40k. He asked what would it take to close the deal today? I said ya'll need to get serious if you want to sell that truck, but it appears that you aren't, I don't want to sell mine so let's just forget it. He was really trying to get a sale as he kept pressuring me for a number, I just said we're too far apart, I wouldn't pay 5 figures difference. He offered that if the sales manager cut the number in half would I purchase the truck? I told him you would have to do at least that, so off he went again. He came back with new offer, my truck and 10k. By now my truck was ready to pick up so I told him I had to go, I got up and than saw sales manager coming over to me. He introduced himself and asked what he had to do to put me in that truck today? I said look, we are so far apart and I don't want to sell anyway. He said well it's the end of the month and you won't get a better deal than today. I said hell, you didn't discount the new truck one penny and you low ball my truck, that's a good deal foe me? He that started to throw new numbers out for what would I take for my truck, 40k, 42k, 46k? I said yea, you give me 46k for my truck, I'll pay full price for the Tundra, we have a deal. Well I can't do that, he said with a real attitude and walked away. This is a short story of what really took about an hour of my time. No chance I would even consider buying from that dealership again.

Wow, I feel bad for all the folks that don't do their research and realize such prices/charges are unreasonable for all but the lowest-volume vehicles.

    PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT:

    1. Everything is negotiable.
    2. Use www.truecar.com to see the "bell curve" of prices in your area. Never accept a price above the average, INCLUDING fees (not taxes)
    3. Use www.truecar.com to check other zip codes in other regions. Compare to cheaper regions to get better prices.
    4. Be willing to take a long weekend and pay a one-way plane ticket to buy a truck in a cheaper region (see #3 above). It could save you thousands.
    5. Never buy an extended warranty & don't pay for dealer add-ons like paint protection and VIN etching.
    6. Patience and research will save you a ton of money.
    7. Use this spreadsheet to understand your deal: https://www.carbuyingtips.com/download/offer.xls Show it to the salesman or new car manager and they will know you are serious and likely not screw around with you much.

Source? I have an offer in on a truck (special order) for $3200-ish below MSRP plus tax.

Yep, that's to snag the unwary and uneducated.

Here's the truck (you left stock # visible, which Google found): http://www.toyotaofelizabethcity.co...trd-sport-4wd-4d-double-cab-5tfdz5bn2hx015065

So if you went online you'd see a price of $37,583

So basically double-slimey in that they're attempting to really rip-off the walk-in Homer Simpsons while not necessarily deterring those smart enough to drive a web browser.

You answered your own question while you were on the lot. Why did you make a thread?

The Toyota dealer near me tried to do that (+$2K) on the truck I ordered. I laughed at them and they handed my check back. They called me two days later and I told them I already bought elsewhere (I had) and if they wanted to do better I'd give them a chance. I didn't tell them I bought 400 miles away.

I made this thread because it's bullsh** that a dealer would try and snag an extra 3 grand for a new vehicle. Even though it appears on the Internet the "extra" markup disappears, it's still being advertised and to me this is just price gouging. I ran several businesses over a 30+ year period and to me this is just not the right way to do business.

They are a private dealership, they can do as they please.

There is a supply and demand issue in most areas for these trucks. If there isn't, this makes it easier for them to bring the price back down to msrp so the customer feels happy they saved some money

This is why I teach at public schools. Fuck capitalism

Dealerships have different online pricing all the time, shit Cabelas does it. My first Tacoma was like this, but I was aware and it actually cost them more money. I walked out of the dealership because they wouldn't remotely honor the online price. The owner chased me as I was leaving the lot, asked me what the deal was. I told him about the price difference and now that I was pissed off, I would even accept the online price. In the end I got another grand off the used truck and an additional 500 off my trade that would maybe get 200 bucks at a junk yard. In the end I got the 11k truck for just over 8. Use this shit against them.

    all tore up already
people beat them selves up so much about price and deals. heres whats important:
-did you get the vehicle YOU wanted?
-are YOU happy with the deal?

done and done. there will always be a better deal somewhere. nobody takes into account financing deals, trades etc. theres a lot that goes into a car deal so just to say "i got my truck for xxxx off" is foolish. i sold cars for 8 years and did very well. i paid msrp for my tacoma. before flaming, i got more than fair deal on my trade and financing with no points added. also got the manual trans black ac trd sport i REALLY wanted. and it was the only one in the northeast region a month after the trucks came out. i got what i wanted at what i was considered a fair deal.

It's no wonder the dealership I buy from sells new cars all over the country. I'm in a region that doesn't do this slimy shit. I'm so glad I don't have to deal with this where I'm at

In a capitalist society it's gonna allow you to be a sucker if you are one. There were a few dealers charging a dealer markup and most others here in SoCal that just wouldn't budge off of msrp. If people will pay the premium for their trucks the dealers will keep charging a premium.

The market adjustment doesn't bother me. The fact that he dropped the net from 19k to 10k before even starting serious negotiation tells me this is not a place that I want to do business.

    Wow... that's some hate there.

Also Liberal and globalist go together like oil and water.... just sayin. Had you went to a public school you "might" have learnt that from some liberal school teacher that gave a shit about teaching people truth.

Yeah anyone can sell stuff for any price ... the market makes the adjustment on price OR the person selling goes out of business.
    Econ 101 bro.

Dealerships depend on most people going into a dealership and the sales people pray on whats called "impulse buying". You like the truck they upsell it cause they know the only thing you want at this moment in time is to drive that truck home... you as a consumer can almost taste it ... soo sooo good .... mmmm I need truck ... that $4k markup over a 6 year loan is only $55/month extra... not a problem I'll take it.

I've laughed and walked out when dealership/sales people treat me like that. I suggest everyone else do the same. Its a truck .... go to another dealership or better do you deal thru e-mail, get deal in writing and shop for a loan if you need one.

Yeah unfortunately most dealerships are like that. I feel for the people who don't do research and end up taken advantage of. As others have stated the only mandatory fees you should have to pay are government taxes. I messed up a bit when I got mine, I was so focused on getting fair price for my trade in, that I didn't think about negotiating added "fees". Lesson learned though.
