Hello everyone! I just finished changing my transfer case oil on my Tacoma with red line mt90. Upon finishing, my dad requested I do his too. He's driving an 07 4x4 Tacoma automatic. I'm not too familiar with automatics, could anyone suggest a gear oil to use for this project? I can only assume that it would call for something special.

    Thanks!
    Tacos for dinner tonight anyone??

Check your manual.I believe it is the same as front diff.Oil .and I change front diff. And transfer at same intervals.

I was told to use a gl-4 gear oil only for the tcase and gl-4/gl-5 for the front and rear diffs. The manuals don't suggest brand names other than Toyota brand products, I was looking for help on choosing a brand that works, and if automatic 4x4s require a gl-4 only or gl-5/gl-4.
I read somewhere in the 2nd gen forum that using a gl-4/5 in your tcase could damage the synchros vs using a straight gl-4.

    Thanks!

There are no synchros in the transfer case.

Gl4 or GL5 won't matter if it is synthetic.

I think what your asking is - if there is a difference between the oil in the transfer case behind a manual vs. an automatic.
The answer is no. The T-case is an independent unit and takes the same fluid regardless of the transmission type.

Thank you everyone for your helpful knowledge!
So changing the transfer case oil on an automatic with red line mt90 (no sense in buying new oil if what I've got will work) will be just fine?
I must saw after changing my tcase, I can feel a notible difference in shift quality!

Front and rear diff, and transfer case all use the same gear oil. Takes about 6 quarts to do all three. There's a great how-to on here...'search' is your friend.

So red line mt90 (75w90) will be ok in the auto Taco?

In the transfer case MT 90 will be fine.

Thanks, the more I thought about it, the more it made sense that the (auto and manual) tcase would call for the same weight.
Again thanks to everyone who chimed in, drive safe.

Mobil One 75-90 in all three... do it every 30,000 miles. If heavy duty use, towing, etc. use Mobil One 75-140 in the rear diff and 75-90 in the front and transfer case.

Had the stealership do all three first time around to break the factory plugs loose... got charged for 11 quarts! Asked the service manage why I got charged for 11 when it takes 6-7. His response... "well, sometimes they take more".
    Toyota... Oh What A Feeling!!

Love the redline product! If you have a manual trans have you done that as well as the diffs. I would wager you get a mpg bump.

This statement makes me think you are confused.

The 6MT takes gear oil. The 5AT uses Toyota WS spec fluid. Do not use gear oil in the 5AT.

The transfer case is a totally separate unit. You can use the same gear oil as in the axles. I myself wouldn't waste MT90 on a transfer case since it doesn't really see a real benefit like your 6MT does. I run MT90 in my 6MT and then Valvoline 75w85 GL-5 dino oil in the front differential, rear differential, and transfer case.

Unbelievable, those dealers are robbers! Just curious, How much did they charge you per quart and did they use synthetic? Big difference in cost...

Wow, that's a load of horseshit. I wouldn't stand for that. There's no logical explanation for "sometimes they take more", you fill it until it's full....that quantity doesn't vary. That's highway robbery right there and I would demand they charge me for the correct amount.

Maybe the tech knocked over the barrel and spilled a bunch of fluid everywhere and they tried charging you for it lol
