he's not having a problem with it opening suddenly or not closing so don't see a need for retiming.

I'm guessing he is referring to retiming the open close operation like its not closing all the way and thats why its leaking.
I know its a very common issue with VW, if you disconnect the battery and don't do a certain retiming thing your windows and sunroof don't open and close properly. Its easy to do though, just when power is reconnected, hold window down until its all the way down and hold for 3 seconds then hold all the way up and hold 3 seconds. calibrates the auto up and down thing then same with sunroof just open all the way and hold knob turned all the way then close.

You'd be amazed how many don't do it and then have opening and closing issues with the sunroof. If you don't do it properly the sunroof could randomly open in the tilt position while driving.

Really... Well.. "Kick me in the shins and call me Hoppa-long"...Is that all the problem is..?? Sounds like an easy fix... I've never heard of anything like this... I guess It's time to go back to the crank windows and crank sunroof... hehe....

It does sound like the OP's issue is with it not closing completely, but is that not why there are drains in place.... to catch and redirect that water out safely...?? I guess if it rains TOO hard the drains can't handle..??

drains get clogged all the time, but it seems a bit odd to already be clogged that its a new vehicle.
I clean my drains once a year with my jetta.

His sounds more like a seal issue and clogged drain.
The seal usually stops most water but some will get through it thats when the drain is supposed to work. Sounds like both are failing on him.

EDIT: just read second page skipped it by accident, Lexicon said he had same issue and retiming fixed it so maybe that is OPs case.

It can look like its closed flush but the slightest gap will let water in.
Not sure how to retime it with Toyota, I know Lexus is the same as VW so wouldn't hurt to try it.

As I mentioned earlier in this thread I had the same leak he is referring to. Back of the sunroof, centered. Took it to Toyota and they had to make a small adjustment on the "timing" of the belt that opens and closes the roof. I'm sure were talking very small measurements. It being that it didn't close quite tight enough. All fixed!

Yes, same issue, also had the same issue (sorta) in my 07 Lexus IS, accidentally open the moonroof with a thick sheet of ice on roof, I could here the gears slip on the belt that dives the operation. Took it to Toyota after I completely removed headliner etc. for them to access and replace the broken belt....

Just how big are your drains that they need to be cleaned with a car?

x2. There is a very high pressure car wash near work that can make mine leak. Never in rain, snow, or normal gas station car washes, though. My dealer's service manager's truck does the same, I guess.
