18-27% eh? Quite the estimate.. I'd say maybe 19.215% ballpark

I generally don't care how badly words are misused, but can we call it shift flare instead of flair, please. All I can think of is how many pieces of flair to wear (Office Space) when I read through this thread.

I only watched one day, but if you are talking about that minor/moderate shift flare, mine does that also when it's cold. Many others have reported the same thing. I don't think your transmission failed; I think it just does that because they didn't dial out all the quirks when they did the update. I don't think the dealer will find a problem because "they all do that" and it's a "characteristic of the vehicle" at this point. It's possible there's enough build variation so that the issue only affects certain trucks, but it is a widely reported characteristic of the new transmission software.

I can understand if that's not acceptable to you and you want to drive them to fix the issue. However, I think you are looking at a software or hardware design change and the dealer will not be able to make it better unless Toyota makes that change.

I hope you find a solution that makes you happy.

Hi. The service department, at my local dealer, saw my videos. They think my valve body is the problem. By the way, my service manager repaired transmissions before moving into management. He feels the transmission will become worse in the fairly near future. The service team felt the issue was not software related. They just need to capture the issue on the Techstream, and then they will likely change out the transmission. The Master tech, who has been with Toyota for over 14 years, is familiar with the issue, and he hopes the transmission hardware will have been corrected by the time my transmission gets changed out. You are right in saying it is characteristic, however, it is characteristic of an unfinished design. I feel confident Toyota and Aisin will correct the design/quality control problem. I am upset that I bought a new vehicle with a major design flaw, and I would expect some 2017's to suffer with the same flaw. It is probable realy just a valve body pressure leak down due to too much clearance in different areas. Toyota really needs to get this fixed.

Source and veracity of this information?

Thank heavens if true. TSB was major improvement, but they need at least another round to get it right. I was just here to double-check my answer was correct (it was): better, but still have issues.

One hint, and that is it... They work for Toyota R&D (not a dealership) and they program the code for the Aisin transmissions.

Open a case with Toyota Corporate. When they tell you to bring it to your local dealer, make sure that you will be driving. Also, park in a good spot to make sure that you can start the truck and get a clean acceleration to 4th gear on your first acceleration to assure the transmission is dead cold. The colder it gets, the worse the problem will be.

After reading through this thread , I agree that there is an issue on cold start up and a 3-4 " FLARE "
I do not believe this is a computer control issue . Its strictly mechanical .
Can engineering compensate for a mechanical issue ? Yes , but how well ?
I would be interested to see the pressure of the Direct clutch ( 4th gear ) as it initially applies for the first time in the morning .
Judging by the feeling from the drivers seat ,Its almost like the direct circuit is missing accumulation on the first upshift to 4th.
If I had to guess , when you shut your truck off at night , the transmission fluid in the accumulators slowly drains off into the transmission pan .
When the truck is cold , it takes time to refill the accumulator for that nice smooth shift into 4th gear rather than a flare.
They call this a drain back problem because transmission fluid drains back to the transmission pan while the truck sits overnight

Hi gearcruncher. I think you uncovered the problem. I had 3 Japanese engineers from Toyota fly in and analyze my truck on Friday. A little birdie told me they were targeting a leak down problem and perhaps a stubborn air pocket in the valve body, due to the leak down, that wasn't burping fast enough. Any thoughts on a true fix for this? And FYI: there will be another software release, under development, that will bandaid the issue. One of the Japanese engineers, that analyzed my truck, writes the code for the Aisins. My transmission will be shipped to them so they can use it to test the new code. As an engineers myself, I must ask... Why not solve the actual problem?????? perhaps cost effectiveness lies in the bandaid. I have seen this throught automotive history.
