What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Put in navigation and communications in Igor. Which is a tablet running BCN. Phone running APRS. Icom 5100 ham radio.

no sorry I didn't take any pictures. Should have though. Basically what did is the actual brackets that the seat bolts go through are held in by spot welds and a few soft steel pins. I drilled them out and that separates them from the old tracks. The old brackets are 17" across center to center. The seats I put in were 17" inside to inside. I started by welding 1/4" flat bar across the mounting brackets where the old racks were then welded a two 1/4" flat bars across extending out another inch or so to make the width to weld to the new bracket spacing. I had to weld some spacers in the back to level the seat some. If I didn't it would have been at a crazy low rider angle.

 

Pff. Radioshack doesn't have anything this good. And my prices are hard to beat.

 

Ahahah sounds about right! I need some ham...itd be fun to learn it and use it. Already talked with Ben and Mike in my thread about aprs etc. Pretty badass and extremely convenient how you guys are setup for these expeditions communication wise (well rig wise too )

 

Yea the coms stuff is recent. Took me a year or more just to get them interested in the Ham stuff. Now they rely on it. It is very handy to have in a lot of ways.

 

So you have two navs and two radios? Why?

 

And as a father I'm worried about my kid driving distracted. Wonder what your dad thinks?

I have a Cb radio..or will.

and a Dual band Ham radio.

And a second 2m radio that is only used for APRS. Its a location type service. The GPS data from the phone on the right is sent to the radio which broadcasts out the data. The data gets picked up by digipeaters which relay it to an igate which is tied into the internet. My GPS data gets posted online at aprs.fi all you need to do is search my Ham Callsign and you can see where i have been in the last 7 days. Very hand for family to track. On top of that i can receive local stations GPS data which will show up on the phones map. So when i wheel with Mike or Ben who have similar setups, i can see exactly where they are. Nice to keep track ifyou get spread out super far.

The map of the APRS rig can be used for nav. But the Tablet allows me to load GPX and KML files so i can follow tracks and see way points of trails that others have posted. Very handy in areas like Utah or places where signs aren't a thing. APRS won't do that.

Lol his is the same. Hell he has 4 radios. He is a Ham radio nut.

 

For real though..

 

This is where the phrase "be nice to geeks, you WILL work for one someday" stems.

 

CB is still the mainstay for short range communication but it is limited in what it can do. Ham is way more formal but much more versatile with much greater range. They compliment each other and don't really duplicate.
