So I have a 2013 TRD 4WD. I'm hearing a "tinny" knock in front when applying the brakes hard around 5 mph. Both forward and reverse in 2WD. No noise denoted while turning. It seems to be coming from the inner CV joints on both sides. Also, the inner joint is pretty sloppy and doesn't seem to fit very snug in the diff. Spinning the tire by hand seems to denote the noise to a lesser degree. Truck has 60K on it. Think the CV shafts are going out already?

You sure it's coming from the inner CV joint and not from the brake calipers? The pads shift within the slots in the calipers when you brake hard or go into reverse.

If the inner CV joint is sloppy in the diff, most likely the problem is with the diff bearing and not with the CV shaft.

Hmmmm.....I'll do a bit more investigating. This makes more sense. Thanks.

BINGO! Yes, it was the brakes on my 2013. So for any of you looking for the fix, here is what I did. I replaced all 4 pins, replaced the two old springs (total $20 from Toyota) and added two new springs on the top pads. I also cleaned the squeal plates and removed any corrosion on the plates from the brake pistons using a razor blade. The pads still had 75% of the lining left....no need to change them.

    No more brake click.
