Just bought my 2015 Tacoma, with 5k miles on it. Does anyone have trouble getting their truck into 4lo, and have trouble getting it back into 2wd? I put in 4lo, and it wouldn't go in on first or second attempt. Then when I tried to get it out of 4lo,it wouldn't do it till I tried about 5 times. When it finally went out of 4lo, I had a problem getting it out of 4hi.

The more it's used the smoother it engages.

I have to hold the clutch all the way to the floor to get mine to go in and out of 4lo. It's not so sensitive when starting it.

I have to roll to a stop in 4hi. Then let off the brake and quickly press the brake in pretty hard, push in the clutch - and it usually goes into 4lo. Usually. If I find myself over geared in a technical situation, there's no getting into 4lo. I've smoked my clutch numerous times because it wouldn't go into 4lo.

Try pushing the clutch all the way to the floor. If it doesn't engage, inch the truck up and try again.

What I use to do was engage 4 high on the go (while moving). Then I make a complete stop to engage it in 4 low (while pushing the clutch all the way to the floor).

Pushing the brake hard enough seems to make a difference for me.

After driving some distance in 4lo every 4X4 I've ever owned could be difficult to get back into 4hi, this isn't unusual with any brand of 4X4. Putting the vehicle in reverse and backing up a few feet usually helps. Sometimes I may have to back up 10' or so, stop and pull forward 10' and repeat the process several times.

When shifting between 2hi and 4hi the vehicle needs to be moving. If you are sitting at a dead stop it would be rare for the gears in the transfer case to be lined up perfectly for them to engage. But if you are moving slowly they will engage when everything lines up. Same thing when are going back to 2hi.

New owners don't always understand, but it best to not go directly from 2hi into 4lo, or back directly from 4lo into 2hi. Shift from 2hi into 4hi while moving slowly and wait until it engages. Stop the vehicle, shift to neutral or push in the clutch and then shift to 4lo. It works best if the vehicle is slowly rolling, the wheels need to rotate a partial turn for gears to line up. If it doesn't go into 4lo it probably will after letting out on the clutch or shortly after putting an auto back in gear.

Getting out of 4lo is often harder. Stop the vehicle, put the vehicle in neutral, or press in the clutch with a manual, shift to 4hi. If it doesn't shift, go back to 4lo and try backing up and pulling forward a few times, then try again. Repeat until it goes back to 4hi. Once in 4hi, start driving, then shift to 2hi. Don't try to go straight from 4lo to 2hi.
