It's stupid. I just bought a 2015 and I am not happy that toyota put back drums on it. Almost every single vehicle made uses disk brakes for almost every reason you think of for the last 20 years. Is there any kit to change over to disc's without replacing the axles.

Cost and reliability is the answer.

There are a lot of threads in the forum with the same question and answers.

They work, 60+% of braking is done in the front, they last forever, don't worry about it and enjoy your truck.

It does and it doesn't to me.

They have 4 wheel discs on the 4Runner and Tundra but not the Tacoma.

    This.

I'd rather clean mud off a caliper and disc than pull the wheel and drum and clean out, brake clean and regrease.

What bearings have you killed in there. They'd be even more exposed with discs if there was a bearing that didn't have a seal first, which there isn't. Mine cake up and then I spray them out, but they usually clean themselves and return to normal. Never had a bearing issue and I get it plenty dirty.

I have them on my old (97) 4runner. They die if you look at them wrong. It's why I bought the new truck. The fronts on that truck lasted forever.
water, dirt, you name it and they go bad. It's true the fronts do most of the braking but all the brakes need to work.

Why do you think you need disk brakes? What difference do you think it actually makes that isn't in your head?

I'm willing to bet 99% of the cars that have rear disks have them for marketing purposes because people have your attitude, not actual function and reliability.

It really is mostly marketing for trucks. All wheel disc cars die stop faster than just front, but you don't really want a ton of braking over the bed of a truck.

Tacoma engineers states it's for off road purposes. it'd a lot harder to get rocks and junk stuck up in a drum than it is a caliper.

Cost and reliability also. Does your truck have an issue stopping? No? Move on.

My last 3 vehicles, Ford Bronco, Ford Ranger and now the Tacoma, have all been drums in the rear. All are regarded as off road/enthusiast trucks, and all have performed well.

I don't know about you guys but I feel that my 2016 sr brakes very good.. those 2 piston calipers make their job pretty well..
I remember when I drove my dads 97 Silverado and that shit needed a loooooot of space for braking...
I feel like the brakes acts like a normal car, sharp!
