It only took one day at the office and the commute home (public transit), but I finished reading the whole thread. I'm now convinced that the first mod on my new 17 is going to be a plate bumper. I think I would be going with the ARB bumper because of the replaceable crumple plates.

The only other thing that I could possibly add to the discussion relates to the comparison between plate bumpers and tube bumpers. I would have to say that plate bumpers are (in theory) way stronger. As some have mentioned pipe is very good when the shape is held, however when it is dented or deformed, it will crumple like a soggy burrito. Plate on the other hand requires significant deformations (compared to tube) before you start to get significant loss of strength. Pipe has its uses, I would use it as a strut or column, but I would never choose to use it in an application where it would take a hit on the sidewall. Think of it this way, you often see circular columns in buildings, but have you ever seen a circular beam? Engineers just don't use pipe sections as beams.

There are many, many application of circular or tortoid shaped structural members, while they don't maximize the second moment of inertia in ONE direction, the have equal strength in all directions when rotated around the axis.

How about you look at the main post of a drill press, milling machine or lathe?

What bumper is this? I like how it somewhat keeps the angles of the front end.

I've been looking at bumpers (if my truck makes it out of the shop) for a few days now. I like ARB bumpers for there ability to absorb impacts without damaging the frame. The ones they make for the 2015 Tacoma are ugly IMO with the hoop design....Has anyone ever hacked one up to remove the outer tube and leave the center intact?

I will have to dig up the photos from the ARB my dad was running and passed on to me. You would be utterly shocked at the damage of the truck vs the minimal damage to the bumper. I still have it on my truck and it has been in two low speeds incidents with nothing more than the mount brackets needing to be straightened a bit.

You can order it directly without hoops. Great people to do business with. The one in the picture is their aluminum which costs more but saves weight.

People have fitted the pre 2012 update ARB to post '12 trucks. Agree, poor redesign, the update hoops are too vertical, and the bumper itself sticks out several more inches from the front of the truck. You can see most of the hoop from the drivers seat, whereas the older one you can just barely see the top of the tubing. @crazy joker did this, look at his build thread

    Thanks for all the replies!

I dug up the old pics I was referring too....Now granted this is on an older Tundra, still same concept and still an ARB bumper.

My dad works in the oilfield and makes long drives back and forth to work, one night on his way to work he fell asleep at the wheel and side swiped and 18 wheeler trailer. When he woke up he said the 18 wheeler was coming to a halt and his truck was being dragged sideways caught up under the carriage of the trailer just before the wheels. Once cops arrived to the scene and investigated the incident it was determined that had it not been for the bumper his truck would of most likely been sucked up under the wheels of the trailer, most likely resulting in his death. The bumper saved his life and the truck well not so much but he did keep driving it for quite awhile after the incident until he finally sold it off. He took time to write a letter to ARB thanking them for the quality and craftsmanship they put into their product. He gave me the bumper, which still sits on my 02 Tundra, winch and all....Not that it matters but the winch is an old Ramsey from back in my grandfathers farm days, it was used as a trailer winch for when his tractors broke down and he needed to take them in for service.

The only thing that happened to the bumper was the passenger side dented in some where it got hung up on the trailer.

Edit: Dang it's been awhile! Lookign at the pics I notice my tundra is actually parked next to his and I see the swing arm of the old 82' Honda XR250R I had. lol

So question for everyone... I understand a plate bumper can be considered stronger than a factory bumper and all of that, but...... how does putting a plate bumper impact your airbag sensors?

Adding plate bumper does not affect your airbag sensors. There is no physical button that gets pushed when your front end is dented in a certain amount. airbag sensors are set off by a change in momentum. side airbags can be set off by exceeding a certain amount of tilt, in case of a rollover.

As i understand it, the Tacoma sensors operate by principle of detecting rapid deceleration coupled by G-Forces, or something to that effect. My sensors are still in place behind my ARB, and ARB does advertise itself as 'airbag' compliant .. that could amount to the 3/8" dish-out of the bumper top plate, to clear the sensors at that point without bumper contact, in initial impact.

Oh .. and this was an almost-impact.

Note that this douche in a Passport just used a highway off-ramp to by-pass a 1/2 km traffic like his personal slip-road, cut in front of the SUV behind him on the shoulder, and then he thought that a moment of turn-signal will magically turn about 1 car-space into adequate space for him to dodge into. I will admit that i initially reacted slow - couldn't even comprehend initially what was going on to see a nose veer into my air-space .. just hammered the horn, and geared down/braked. I had JUST slipped into 3rd, when he pulled this stunt.

He proceeded to cut off the guy behind me to get into the 'fast lane', like it was no big thing... and then dived off of the highway at the next interchange 1 km down the road.

People continually ask why the armor on a 2wd slug... in this region, with this sort of traffic congestion (tight but semi-moving traffic at rush hour is pretty much the norm..).. this is precisely the reason why.
