For my first post, I had to show off how proud I am of this truck. I unfortunately had the transmission fail in my 740il and decided to tow it to our family's shop in Phoenix.

Had to lie to the Uhaul guys and picked up their car trailer that weighs in at ~2200lbs.
The car is supposed to be ~4300lbs... You can see where this is going!

We towed the Bimmer from San Diego to Phoenix without any issues. I was a little nervous about how the truck would handle the >6500lbs load but after loading up and taking it for a spin it felt fine and we hit the highway. I was able to average 12mpg over the course of the trip.

I was surprised at how manageable the sag was. We were definitely pulling heavy, and I wouldn't want to pull this weight every week, but this was definitely doable with the Tacoma some meager driver skill.

Anyways, here's ~6600lbs of stuff behind the Taco, enjoy!

All loaded up and ready to do a test run.

Me with the set up. Happy camper since the parking lot test pull felt solid.

The Tacoma is one capable rig.

There's some truth in that statement. Definitely a PITA to stop, however, I caught myself creeping up to 75 more than a few times on I8 once past the AZ state line:thumbsup:

If you're going to do that stuff regularly, get an Ultragauge and monitor your trans temp

    Agree.
Truck would also handle it better during stopping with a trailer that had electric brakes instead of surge brakes. But of you don't tow enough to own a trailer, uhaul works.

Good call. We have a 6x12 enclosed we tow pretty regularly for dirt bike trips. Probably comes out to around 3,000lbs. Would be good to keep an eye on it. I'm thinking an auxiliary tranny cooler in the near future too.

Windsor, mind if I ask how you like your AirLift bags? I'm looking to pick up some soon, more for loads of dirt than towing though.

The Airlift bags were good. They definitely made my truck handle heavy loads and heavy trailer a lot better. As soon as I can, I'm going to go with the Firestone bags with Daystar cradles. I also ran (and still have) the Airlift auto leveling setup.
Went from AZ to OR fully loaded with my car in my trailer (loaded with household goods), and my 2 bay tool box loaded with tools in the bed. Handled it very well.

My old man used to haul this rig all over New England back when we raced motocross. Steel frame 6x10 trailer with bikes, 55 gallon water barrel, etc.. Not sure the weight of the camper though my estimate is around 1,500-2,000 lbs. The truck was a 2003 3.4 v6, 5 sp manual. Deff was a challenge for the motor but it never skipped a beat. Didn't go beyond 4th gear to keep the rpms up. Hauled up and down some pretty steep grades too but she kept truckin!

*good* surge brakes will stop a trailer better than any electric toy brakes. Problem with uhaul, is that their surge brakes are JUNK. My flatbed has ventilated disk surge brakes on the front axle, and with 6000-7000 pounds on it, it stops on a dime.

    I tow all the time:

    Dump_wood_1.jpg

Air Lifts, 2" AAL on a Canadian TRD 4 leaf pack, ICON 2.0 RR's, Curt Brake Controller with brakes on both axles of the trailer.

My 18' float is equipped with the same two axle brakes:

Farm tags on the truck allow me to go over the GV rated towing weight.

    Works great!

P.S. Surge brakes are now illegal in these parts.
