I do not get how a tire shop could do that though.
Thats a pretty big fuck up.

You'd think they'd have the tires stocked by size, or if they ordered them in for you they'd have your name on it.
Whoever the tech was mounting them was an idiot to not catch that.

I'd be letting everyone know about what shop it was so they don't go to this hack job tire shop.

I've already asked toyota about this.
Shouldn't void your full warranty just the components you change.

Unless you go and do a 6in lift or long travel which some will like to blame for problems. But otherwise if you're only doing a 2-3" lift shouldn't cause any issues as long as you still have a proper angle on the shafts.

Edited my original post, it was done at discount tires, the manager was super helpful and apologetic and since I've been there on the wrong end of the stick I would rather not bash them entirely. Yes I do give people the benefit of the doubt to often but just so all you guys don't get in a situation like this I'll let the forum members know.

    You're too kind.
After I caught a VW tech peeling out in my car and revving the shit outta it before bringing it in the bay when I was getting shit done I went on all the local VW sites and vwvortex and made sure everyone was well aware to stay the fuck away from that dealer.

Mind you I had 5 run ins with the dealer between putting the wrong tires on my car, revving the engine, telling me a flickering dashboard was normal. wipers breaking after 2 days of ownership.

nobody has mentioned yet but could you say the complete tire size of each? 285 and 265 are width dimensions not height. Everyone is assuming the diameter is different but you never told us the complete size. Maybe I'm blind but I can't see a difference in height on the picture you posted.

I don't think you damaged anything per se. Get the right tire on immediately. You still have many more 60k powertrain miles on the warranty I'm assuming? You'd notice long before then if anything was seriously messed up.

I would also make sure that discount tire location fully documents their mistake clearly on the paper they give you, stating the specifics of what happened down to the exact tires and size and the exact date it occurred on. AND I would photocopy it and take a picture of it as soon as they give it to you (the ink wears off quickly on their stuff). That way you are covered from them in case any short term damage does appear for some reason and toyota finds out it wasn't due to manufacturing error. I assume discount tire would want to avoid a lawsuit if anything happened and it would be wise of them to cover any relevant future damage.

With that said, I always get tires at discount tire and I have not had any bad experiences with them. Being a franchise (I believe they are a franchise), different locations will give different experiences. Plus the free rotations and balancing are nice. They also replaced a michellin tire I had when it got a flat they told me they could patch and then the patch failed, all for free of charge. And this was years down the line and they couldn't even find me in the system.

Good luck OP, I don't think you broke any mechanical components. Especially if after getting the correct tire on 4wd still works great. But definitely get names and a paper trail for your safety.

Wow that's pretty bad. Discount Tire managed to put slightly wrong tires on mine the first time (E load instead of C load) with my KO2's. easy fix but something they overlooked.

It also took four attempts to get them mostly balanced. Then when the dealer rotated them they were off again and it's still off after a couple more tries. I'll just have a small shop in town do it after I hit my 20/25K or so, since they always got it right on my Tundra. Have yours balanced well? Mine shakes around 65-80 range. Mostly at 70-75. Smooths back out on the turnpike.

But wrong sized tire is almost impressively bad.

Should be fine. As far as your differential is concerned, you were driving in a huge circle for the last 800 miles.

I would be pretty pissed though. That's gross incompetence.
