    Hi, All,

Just sold my 2000 PreRunner and looking to get a 2017 TRD OR. Can't decide on DCLB or DCSB.

    1. Long bed is definitely more convenient when hauling stuff and carrying all gears for a camping trip. But its longer turning radius and wheelbase may make it harder to meneuver on some tight trails.

    2. Short bed's bed is quite short and has much less space especially with the wheel well bumps going all the way to the front end of the bed. I'll have to get a bed extender to carry our tandem bicycle and the kids' bikes. But the shorter wheelbase may make it more agile on off road trails. And it is less expensive and easier to park in town.

Toyota in the past did't even offer DCLB for the TRD OR edition, not sure why.

    Any thoughts on this?

    Thanks!!

It depends on what you are using it for man, I personally went with the SB even though I work at a wedding venue and haul 8' tables. Why? good question. 1) I am planning on moving in a few years and know I wont always need the extra footage, Plus Ive been managing to make it work with a 2005 prius up until now (Haha, yeah I know) 2) I love in the city and there are A LOT of cars here, SB trucks are already pretty long once you add on a double cab, just makes it more manageable and easier to maneuver. 3) LB trucks actually limit your options to some extent and require other features. Since I didn't feel an overwhelming need for the extra footage, I would rather get the bargain Tonneau cover, and black and red interior with my exterior color of choice (MGM)

Have owned both a SB and LB, when I owned the SB I always found myself wishing I had more bed. Since owning the LB I've never thought I had too much.

Are you going to spend more time maneuvering on tight trails or hauling stuff?

Longbeds ride better on the highway due to the longer wheelbase.

Bikes and toolbox in a longbed, tailgate is up.

Short bed with the tail gate down provides the same platform space as long bed with the tailgate closed. A simple strap to the tie downs is all that is usually needed with the tailgate down, no need for a bed extender for some bikes.

You've already identified the major pros and cons, you just need to decide.

The OR was likely not previously offered as a long bed because the short bed is the better truck for most off road use as it is more maneuverable and has a better break over angle.

This was my thinking as well...even if I have to pop the tail gate and strap down 8' tables I can do so as I would be driving on private property...it all just depends.

Fyi the backup camera is useless with the tailgate down.

LB,just my 2 cents, I would rather have it and not need it,than need it and not have it.

If you are going the DC, I'd get the LB... it's outta proportion with a SB...in my opinion..!
If doing AC, then SB is OK....!!

I believe the bed on the AC is the same size as the LB on a double cab, both 6feet something like an inch or so. The SB is 1 foot shorter at 5 plus.

For me it is the long bed. I haul construction material and the extra bed space is needed. The most off roading I will do is in the snow.

This is a very good point. Backup camera is especially important while hauling longer stuff.

Unless you need to fit in a garage or want a manual transmission, the longbed beats the shortbed in just about every catagory. Turning radius in the LB isn't that bad either. SB is a compromise and there are a few tricks to mimic a longbed. LB owners never try to mimic the stubby box.

For me it's the short bed simply because they don't offer a manual in the long bed.

I had make the same decision and since I was also coming from a completely different style DD (Infiniti G35 coupe) it was hard to decide if the extra foot on the LB would be too much to handle. In the end I haven't regretted my secession to go OR DCLB. I love the extra space and since I have a shell on it I can very comfortably sleep in the bed. So far I have done some light off roading and the size was manageable, and it was tight in some parts with steep climbs and descents you just have to be aware of the trucks capacity on the trail. Since I don't plan on doing any extreme off roading I am not worried about the obsitacle of the longer wheelbase, it's only been a plus so far. Love the truck. Good luck with that the new purchase

Thank you all for your replies. It appears LB is the way to go. It is not easy to find one with the preferred color choice, though. And it seems that most of the DCLB TRD OR are built in Mexico. I know this will start another debate on whether the US built is superior to the Mexican built. Well, sometimes fewer options make the decision making easier. Maybe just go get a Ridgeline - Honda's new car with bed. ;)

My TRD OR LB was built in TX, both factories build them.

There's a reason they're so hard to find, they're that desirable.

I love my LB. I went with the LB because of my mountain bikes. I wanted to haul with them mounted with the gate up. Since then I have put on a camper and will have some mounts to the inside tailgate for the bikes.

I love the storage space. If you dont plan to haul a lot, the short bed is a little easier to drive but honestly after driving the LB for a couple of months I can maneuver it anywhere.

I will never go to a SB. Honestly SB just look weird.

Long Bed all the way man. Trust me, if you get the short bed you will regret it. For daily driving purposes, nothing beats that extra foot with the gate up. And for camping, overland, wheeling etc, you will get so much more out of it.

I actually had to look for 6-8 months before I found a Long Bed that I liked here in SoCAL.

Depending on the wheeling that you do, you should be fine on the trails with the long bed. The backup camera has been a life saver for me on the trail a few times, including the gnarly switch back of death (yes someone has actually died on that turn) at Laurel lakes.

Simple.....long bed. And if your garage doesn't fit get a new house!
