Me too ... but I've gotta admit I live in the northeast and doing that on cold windy winter day I dread it .. I'm not as young as I used to be (but before I start it I pull the dipstick and check for myself before I leave there) ...

 

I wouldn't expect anything less than a new truck and a sailboat for your troubles

 

This is tort law negligence caused damage. He doesn't get a new truck or new engine because of this. He had the value of the motor up to this point. He's entitled to damages and nothing else. Stop this nonsense.

 

Had this happen on my Ford F150 six years ago. Mechanic drained and refilled with oil then went to lunch. When he got back from lunch he again added fresh oil, forgetting he had already filled engine with oil before he went to lunch. When he started the truck---instant engine seize, the engine hyper-locked due to excess oil. It cost the dealership a new motor and a new 6 year warranty on complete power-train (an over $7,000 oops). At first they wanted to drop in a well used engine(from a truck with way more mileage than mine) with the justification that my truck had 80,000 miles on it. My truck was in almost new condition. I declined right away and insisted on a new factory Ford engine with extended warranty. It took a few weeks of phone calls to Ford Corporate to get what I wanted but it was worth the hassle. The dealer ended up replacing water pump, starter (the truck went through 3 starters while I owned it) and a few other minor items as well. They would not pay for a rental vehicle or give me a loaner, which I though was odd considering the situation. I ended up selling the truck to my buddy a couple of years later and he is still using it everyday on his farm. Good luck with your Tacoma, stick to your guns and document everything.

Its not a good place to start. Its unrealistic. Start at the top of a realistic expectation.

Easy outcome.
Starting with no oil a short period will cause no harm. Recommended no. But reality is it wont.

Run it long enough to hear noise and it doesn't take an express oil mechanic to tell you the engine is shot,

Do you realize what these "bearings" are? They are not ball bearings for the most part, they are pieces of metal that retain some oil between them to offer a slick surface. If you don't have oil pressure, you won't have that film between the bearing surfaces, you get metal-to-metal contact, and that is NOT good. Even if the bearing remains quiet, it may well be scuffed enough that it now runs hotter, with a smaller than normal oil gap, etc.

Not worth the risk. When it seizes, it is obviously too late. But if it has not, it MIGHT still be too late as once the wear starts it won't stop until destruction. These things are precision parts, you do NOT run them without oil and expect them to be undamaged.

 

Given that you only had 15K miles on it, I would recommend starting your negotiations with asking for a replacement motor. From there, I think your negotiation fall back positions are in order of preference:

1. If they can come up with a similar Tacoma with 15K miles and same condition as yours, you can even trade for that. They then can do whatever they want with your truck and do their bullsh*t lets run i for 250 miles and then sell it to some unsuspecting rube.
2. Replacement long block.
3. 15K mile motor from a wrecked Tacoma that had no damage to motor and a warranty equal to what your current warranty is (good luck finding one of those - but its possible)
4. replacement short block with cylinder heads inspected for damage (including cam journals), all camshafts and valvetrain parts inspected and micrometered to ensure no wear including timing chains and top end of motor reassembled.
5. Pull apart entire motor and visually inspect and micrometer cylinder walls, pistons, piston rings, wrist pins, connecting rods, connecting rod journals, main journals, check crankshaft for straightness and cracks, check connecting rods for cracks, inspect & measure all camshaft journals and lobes, timing chains etc). Replace any parts showing visual wear and not measuring within specs. Reassemble motor with new crankshaft bearings, connecting rod bearings, piston rings, camshaft journal bearings. My guess is that the amount of labor to do this right, they can buy the long block and or short block with cylinder head reassembly a lot cheaper.
5. Hire an attorney to work it out.

Eh? LOTS of dealers offer lifetime powertrain warranties for absolutely free, if you ignore the requirement that they have to do all the oil changes and routine maintenance on the vehicle...

 

This is why my Toyota log shows 0 visits for oil changes and everything else. I would rather do the work myself and know that it's done right. Good luck with your situation OP.

Metal rubbing on metal in your engine is not good. Always need oil/lube.

 

You better fight for a new engine, this is their screw up and there is no reason you should accept anything less.

 

Wow what a clusterfuck situation, I would honestly expect them to replace the engine, time to go speak with a lawyer.
