grease the spline where the drive shafts come together at the carrier bearing... this "technically" normal that the shaft moves back and forth, its just not supposed to bind which is what the pop sound is... the shaft popping back into place..lube with tco this.

You could also try a carrier bearing shim to slightly change the angle ..... could fix or could make it worse... easy enough to try.

look up carrier bearing shim.... 12mm bolts x 2 add a thick washer and re-install - loosen both, remove one at a time. Put a washer in between the bearing holder and frame...re-install bolt, repeat on the other side.

Here's a pic of a tundra same as the Tacoma just dont need that large of a shim - a thick washer should do it.

That is pure B\S NOT true I don't have this problem nor have I had it in any Toyota I've owned.

Don't hope, grab it by the balls and make it stop before it stops you, start by doing the following:

Check and torque u-joint bolts to spec
Check and torque leaf spring U-bolts to spec.

You'd be surprised how much grief these have caused owners and how easy it is to get the problem solved.

    Torque specs:
    U-joint bolts - 65 lb-ft (14mm/17mm)
Center support bearing - 27 lb-ft (be careful, if it was loose, may need realignment)

    Re-torque leaf spring u-bolts - forum recommended

    Torque spec:
    52 lb-ft (19mm)

    Hope that helps
    Cheers!

If that doesn't take care of it find another dealer and insist they take a look at the spline and lube as it could be a defect or lack of lube also as others have mention, but check torque is something simple you can do at home with a torque wrench, or have another dealer do it.

    Cheers!

Anybody remember the thread where the field tech finally drilled a tiny hole to allow relief of pressure being built up or something like that? Is this the same issue?

If it is in the drive line it should be noticeable difference.Much more torque.
