Texas ftw. The castle doctrine extends to our vehicles. So if i am operating my truck, i can have my gun in it loaded without concealed handgun license. We now have open carry too

Why do you have to meet with the sheriff?

Is this a California law or Orange County?

Out here in Pennsylvania a ltcf (our version of a ccw) is a form and a visit to the sheriffs office. They check you in the computer and a few minutes later you wal out with the card

My last one took me about 30 minutes start to finish and 15 of that was chatting with the deputy at the desk

Agreed. And remember, rash decisions made in the heat of the moment are sometimes the regrettable ones when looking back afterwards. You guys be safe out there.

They have gone back to making us prove "good cause" again for the right to carry. This is partly due to Sheriffs department being overrun with applications when Peruta first won against the city of San Diego. They couldn't keep up and were burning up their overtime budget for deputies to conduct the meetings. The attorney general (who is a big anti-gunner) was also putting pressure on all jurisdictions in the state to cease handing out CCW permits as she planned to appeal the case which she did and won. It now heads to the Supreme court to be heard which will determine our fate as well as other restrictive states that are closely watching the case.

"New applicants, and those applicants currently in process, will be required to articulate their safety concerns and provide supporting documentation in accordance with the Orange County Sheriff’s Department’s (OCSD) Policy 218. Each application will be evaluated individually based on the merits of the applicant’s good cause statement and the totality of their circumstances.

Please be aware the application process includes an interview, fingerprinting, background checks, residency verification, successful completion of firearms training, and the payment of all related fees. Applicants may also be required to pass a psychological examination as part of the CCW application process in accordance with California Penal Code Section 26190(f)(1).

You can have pinned mags. I bought a few for my AR that came pinned to 10 rounds (argh), but they are cheap plastic shit.

Here in Mississippi the extent of our gun laws is that it is illegal to shoot someone that didn't deserve shooting. I'm kidding, we have laws, but nothing like California. I'm 16 so if I'm going hunting or shooting etc. my gun(s) are unloaded, locked, and in a locked case. Better that way than in a bunch of trouble.

I believe I have the right to defend myself. Whether or not YOU think I am able to make decisions in the "heat of the moment" is not really of my concern. When some A-hole blocks you into a driveway and pulls a knife because you honked at him for changing lanes into you, you're going to want more than hopes and dreams.

Back to the topic, thanks for all the info guys/girls. My question has been answered.

My good cause was "to protect my family and myself..." Sac Sheriff was very relaxed. Its the time between intial interview, approval, DOJ background check, training/cert to final approval that was the pain. Here is my timeline:

Qualification: 1/18/15 (yes I did my training before even getting approved)
    Intial interview: 1/29/15
    Approval: 3/3/15
    Live scan: 3/3/15
    DOJ/FBI background check: 4/27/15
    Final issurance: 5/4/15

Hey does anybody know the answer to this?

I'm going to Powell and the Grand Canyon soon. I'm driving the whole way and it will just be my girlfriend and I on a 2 week road trip around AZ. I know in AZ concealed carry is legal. Is it legal for a California resident while in that state? I go to AZ all the time but have never had a reason to carry since I've just been at Havasu on vacation. Spending 2 weeks on the road in a truck loaded down with gear makes me want to carry one of my handguns in the truck.

yes but without a conceal carry license you are forbidden from carrying even in your car within 1000 feet from any school grounds (pretty hard to avoid driving through metro areas), and you may not carry in restaurants that serve liquor. You may also not carry with someone under 21 in the car with you. Correct me if I am wrong though.

The best way to find out for sure would be to talk to a lawyer. The school zone thing just can't be right because a lot of people live within a thousand feet of a school, no ccw permit is necessary here either. You can still get one and i think it is a good idea. It has a few perks but is not necessary. Never heard of someone not being able to carry with someone under 21 in the car either lol especially since you can oc at 18

@SixthSnail the biggest thing i think you need to find out about is carrying on any of the Indian reservations. They are sovereign nations and have very strict laws about firearms and other things. Definitely research where you're going to be driving though/going

AZ issues CCW licenses to non-residents. You may want to look into that. They also have reciprocity with other states who issue CCW licenses to non-residents. If memory serves me correctly, you can get both Utah and AZ CCW non-resident permits without having to travel to either one of those states. Check out USACarry.com for more details, check the maps on their site.

I am over cautious. I used to keep everything in a locked case, unloaded, but in the cab. Then I got the bed cover and I still keep them locked in their cases. I know the laws dont require it but I really just dont want an officer with a lack of knowledge or have a different interpretation hassle me.

Listening to the local radion station here in N Kalifornia. Sounds like Gov Moonbeam is getting his way on having to register? or turn in clips you've owned already. Also, I believe the radio said a background check to buy ammo? Crazy. Thanks for airing the above laws regarding transporting weapons. Only pistol I have is a .22, but have a few rifles.
At this point, sounds like Trump just about has the Electoral Votes he needs.

I only carry it in the truck going to/from the range, so I keep it in the range bag with a cable lock through the action and a luggage padlock on the zipper of the bag. Even at that I might technically be on the wrong side of the law since I sometimes have ammo and loaded mags in the bag (no point to waiting till I'm on the clock in a lane to load the first set of mags for the afternoon). Pretty sure the CA legal definition of a "loaded" gun in a vehicle has been expanded to having the weapon and ammunition in the same compartment at the same time without a need for the cops to prove any ammo actually in a mag or a mag in the weapon, but the guy at the gun shop said having the action locked makes it legal to transport.

If I'm not making any intermediate stops, I could put the bag in my swingcase in the bed but if I'm not driving direct, I figure inside the cab is a more secure place for it to be when I'm parked.

If you plan to carry for self defense in a car in CA, it's probably only legal to do if you're active duty LEO (maybe military, also) or have a CCW permit. Otherwise, you'd need to be so many steps from being ready to shoot you'll get killed halfway through the process in any situation where that level of force is appropriate for defense.

    stock....for now
Yes, starting in January, background checks will be required to purchase ammunition in CA. Not sure what exemptions or limits there will be, if any that weren't there before. So stock up before next year.

I live close to the NV border, I can go there for ammo, don't do much shooting anymore, if I ever did. No friends who are into hunting, so my few guns gather dust.

Do you know if ammo can be kept on the outside pockets of the range bag and the handgun in the bigger pocket with the zippers locked? It be easier to carry everything that way, but I'm not sure if you have to have it seperate.. range bag for ammo and accessories and one bag for the gun.
