    OK,
    I am betting that this has been covered somewhere here, but my first few searches revealed nothing obvious;
I have 1 Qt of 10W40 Amsoil that is never going to be used for anything.
Is there any good reason why I could not just mix it into a 5 Qt jug of 5W30 that provides the .5 of a Quart needed when I change my oil?
I cannot imagine that half a Quart containing a 5th of 10W40 would make that much of a difference over the course of 5000 miles.
    What Say Ye?

It won't hurt anything. I have been known to run 7W-35 too.

It won't make a difference, as long as it hasn't been sitting around too long through cold winters. Cold is harder on oil than heat. If it's been around forever, I'd keep it for emergencies or find another use for it (chainsaw bar oil, or some other lube situation).

    Huh,
    Had not thought of that,
It is indeed old, 5 years at the least, and has been out in the shed for all of those winters.
    Hmmm...

With how cheap a quart of oil is, I wouldn't use it in my truck.

    Just my 2 cents....
If the truck was a "beater" - I'd likely do it.
Otherwise, I'd do as above and use it for chain saw chain lube, etc.

I posed the longevity question to Mobil-1 about a yr. ago.
5 yrs. if unopened - 1 yr. once opened.

I would use it as the .4 quart addition to the five gallon jug fill. Amsoil is not cheap.
My wife's car takes 4.5 qt and my truck takes 5.4 qt. I buy Mobile 1 in 5 quart jugs, 5W-30 in the Tacoma and 0W-30 in her car. Guess where the extra 0W-30 goes?
    My chainsaw get straight 30W.

Sorry out of subject but mine only takes 5qts. I looked it up it says 5.5 or 5.6 but I checked my oil level multiple times and since our dip stick is good for nothing I check it first thing in the morning one shot deal and with 5qts it is a little bit over the full mark.
Adding this .5 qt will definitely be way over in my case.
    Anyone noticed it?

When I change oil on my 4.0, 5 quarts is enough. Change your oil, dump in the 5 quarts, and check the oil after it settles out over night. I doubt you'll have to add any. As long as the level is between the two holes on the dipstick, your fine.
