No seriously, if 85 is available where you live run that instead of 87. I ran an experiment a few days ago https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/i-bought-real-gas-today.452191/#post-13360606 and proved (to my satisfaction) that the cheapest gas is the best. At my home altitude (4,300 ft above sea level) 85 is perfectly fine. The reason being that the higher altitude effectively lowers the compression ratio so I don't even need to buy 87.

It's your money, but I've got better things to do with my money than subsidizing the already outrageously profitable oil industry.

    Truth.

    That said....if it's 100' degrees out and you're towing a 6000# trailor....a higher octane certainty couldn't hurt anything.

But the use of a Top Tier fuel is probably way more important than the actual octane.....though most Top Tier premium fuels (91+ octane) contain addtional cleaning additives...for what that's worth.

Along with "what oil do I use", "what's the biggest tire I can run", etc., etc. It happens. :notsure:

its a Toyota truck and that's all the modifications needed
also these trucks have knock sensors that help the truck operate on 87 or lower octane gas, that's why the owners manual says use 87 octane so why throw money away to run 93 octane

Knock sensors are more of a last resort. A engine is tuned to run on a specific octane. They have a pretty good system with the D4S injection

The "Do a search" patrol hit this post. But many readers responded, so go ahead and ask.

I usually put 87 in mine and sometimes when the gasses are super low I'll get 91

I use diesel with a 45 Cetane rating mixed with 2-cycle oil and a little grain alcohol to thin it out.
