Hi all, I have a 2007 Tacoma 2.7 MT 4X4 and have been happy with it. With it needing paint and some other things I was considering a new one but the recent threads with Gen. 3 issues have gotten my attention. And it got me to thinking...are the 4 and 6 cylinder engines and MT transmissions still manufactured in Japan or have they moved the tooling to Mexico or here in the States? Thanks, Tim

Not sure, but the rear end is from Hino (Japanese), but made in Thailand. Mine has the sticker on it still.

Every component for cars are made all over the world now days.
These engines probably aren't even 'made' in one country anymore just assembled.

Doubt they're still made in Japan.

Engines and Transmission for the V6 Automatics are made in the USA. Not sure about the 2.7, or manual. I just watched a fastlane review of the pro, and it had a sticker on the back window saying engine and transmission were made in the USA, 65% parts USA, 15% Japanese.

If it's solid and rust free all over, I'd consider paint and some other things.

You're right. I guess that's why he says he's been happy with it.

Thanks to rmepilot for the answer. I have been happy with my truck as Clearwater Bill figured and power isn't the reason. It has worked well on my trips out west, Montana, Idaho, Utah, Nevada and Colorado mostly and it has been reliable. Before I retired it spent most of it's life outside in the Florida sun and the clear coat has been failing. I had the hood, roof and flares repainted but now the rest of the truck has issues. I should of had the whole thing painted. The engine has been fine and with 120K miles it still has a lot of life left, Hopefully! I have to take it in for the leaf spring recall and was thinking of looking at new ones but I think I am going to just get some paint estimates. This is a great forum and thanks for all the responses. Tim

Can confirm, the 2.7L and MT are from Japan.

As said above, the 3.5L and new 6AT are US built, at TMMAL and AWNC respectively.

My '04 Highlander suffers the same ailment. Mechanically solid, great interior, everything works. 113k. I can't decide whether to doll it up or just keep driving it as it is. Paint isn't financially prudent these days, but neither is buying a new(er) vehicle when the one you have works just fine. Especially if what you'd buy would be similar in many ways.

120k on yours is nothing, assuming you've kept its oil, plugs and filters all up to snuff. Cooling system too.

Rest assured if some salesman sees you while you're there, they'll try to sweet deal you into a 'better' ride. Drop the car off and run! :D

There are some durable paint alternatives. But they assume you have more of a work/woods/fishing truck than a 'looker'. Check out www.monstaliner.com and see some of the creative stuff people have done. I occasionally consider it for the Highlander. :anonymous:

    Yes, but no.
Kamigo is one of the TMC Plants in Japan. But you are correct, this engine is also produced at Toyota Motor Indonesia.
FWIW, I believe North American TR's are coming from Kamigo.

With the automation in production these days, it doesn't matter what plant or country they are made in anymore, the quality is the same The "you must have gotten one made on a Friday" is B.S. Mine was assembled in Texas, so I have a little bit of pride driving a truck assembled in my state, but that doesn't make it any better than a truck made in Mexico, or worse than one made in Japan. Even "American" cars aren't any more American than my truck. Chrysler is owned by Fiat. My daughters Jeep Renegade was built in Italy.
