Should I trade in my 15 for a 17?

So right now I drive a 2015 Tacoma, but it's being finannced by a family member and within 6 months or so I plan to have them refinance and transfer the loan to me so I can get them off the loan. My thoughts are, since I plan on doing this it means starting again with the 38k loan(California taxes and a near 5% intrest rate)and by within the next 6 months I will have positive equity on the truck meaning trading it in won't be a hassle. I would say my truck's value is in the 29-30k it only has 10k miles and within the next 6 months it will accumulate another 5-7k miles, almost like new, I've kept up with all its service and will continue to do so, and well the 3rd Gen have been growing on me and I've been considering trading it in when the loan gets refinanced....if not before and then refinance...it's under finance with Wells Fargo and that's where I have been builidng my credit for the past year and since its the same bank refinancing under my name won't be a hassle since I have been on point with all payments for the truck and their bill payments...

Would it be worth it...or just refinance to get lower intrest rates and lower payments?

I wouldn't get rid of a reliable vehicle with miles that low. Trading in = a loss.

I wish I had this forum around back when I made bad truck/car decisions. Don't do it man. Pay it off and keep it forever. These trucks go forever if well maintained.

I love my 17. that being said, if I had a 15. I would by no means look at getting a 17.

Keep the 15. She's a beaut. Last of an era.

In 10 years people will consider it a real gem, just like we consider the 2004 first gen to be today.

You should buy rock sliders and bumpers from us for your '15. Then trade it in and get rocks sliders and bumpers from us for your '17. That's my vote anyway. :welder:

Kind of surprised nobody mentioned OP still having a note of almost $40k on a 2 year old truck that they couldn't finance on their own, and wanting to turn that over into an even larger loan they may or may not be able to finance, either.

The second gen/third gen comparison is the lesser picture, by far.

I had 16 Tacoma and it's gone and I'm happy, but I needed bigger truck too. I drove my wife dd 10' 4Runner couple days ago, after few months not driving it and it drives amazing compared to 16 Tacoma. You have the same drivetrain in your 15 Tacoma. 4Runner is lifted with 33 tires went up hills without shifting back and forth, where on the other hand 16 Tacoma was shifting like crazy in the same area. I'm not bushing new Tacoma I liked it everything about it except frikin shifting(which sounds like only a few ppl on here experience, rest is happy) it drove me nuts. I thought i was "inspired" by TW and it was my imagination. I was so pissed when driving on pretty flat freeway it would shift back and forth. Keep your 15 and enjoy, at least until they reprogram new gen taco ECU or whatever it takes to make that truck shift properly. I'm not giving up on Toyota and hope it'll be fixed.
Good luck with decision and let flame begin...:bananadance::D:crapstorm:

    Same as everybody else...
Grip ....if there's nothing wrong with the truck, and it sounds like there's not, keep the Damn thing. Sleep on the decision friend, the way Tacomas hold their value it won't make a huge difference if ya wait a year to think on it.

Definitely has some finance problems that need to be ironed out. OP I personally like my 15 and have no interest in the 3rd gens that were on the lot when I bought my truck a little over a year ago. I feel that the 2nd gens are superior in almost every way except for doodads, which mean little to me. The powertrain in the 2nd gens are tried and true unlike the 3rd gens I was, and am skeptical of. This hunch I feel led me to a wise decision when purchasing. Keep your truck there is no reason to get rid of it......unless to improve financial situation.

Just sold my 2004 on kijiji in 2 hours for asking price, no questions asked. Once a truck is so many years old people don't care, and often prefer a clean earlier gen Tacoma.

The exact reason I bought my 2016 4RTE

OP, if you had a truck without a payment, or a almost payed off one then I'd say yes a 2017 taco is a sweet truck, but that's not your situation

I owe like 30k from the starting point of 38k, the reason I had to get a co signer was because during that point my old truck was already in its final runs, it was too much of a hassle to keep it running. I was rebuilding my credit at that point so I also didn't want to go and get another used car that would more than likely run into the same problems down the road. I had been opting for a Tacoma for a whike but I was waiting to get my credit score back up, but desperate times called for desperate measures...Im back on track now, Ive been rebuilding credit slowly and patiently for 2 years now and now thats why I want to take the loan off my co-signer...

My point is that if you didn't have your 2015 then a 2017 would be a logical choice as I don't like buying used trucks. Personally, all the tech gadgets and new looks aside, the 2015 has a better power train IMO. I would stick with what you got, nice truck. I know I love my 4Runner, and test drove a new 3.5L taco and that power train is the main reason I didn't buy one. Again my $0.02
