When I changed to Penzzoil synthetic the difference was noticeable. Engine got quieter and better gas mileage too.

Car oil. Whatever is marketed the best is what sells. Doesn't royal purple say it can go a year? Interesting to see what it's viscosity is after a year

Whens the last time you did a tear down on a pennzoil run motor? parafin (Aka wax) which is a petroleum product, is in conventional motor oil. When the oil is used the additives are worn out. Once they are worn out it begins to leave a waxy residue behind. Aswell as sludge. In the case of pennzoil and quaker state there oils break down much faster than other brands such as mobil one or valvoline. You dont need a oil analysis to prove it happens and to prove there is still wax in oils. Do some research, might suprise yourself with what you find.

Nothing wrong with Quaker state or Pennzoil. Both quality oils.

I'd say you're good to go with any name brand oil. I use whatever is on sale, my engine hasn't gunked up yet.

well, thanks for all the info guys lol
This may be a dumb question but what she the overall recommend viscosity? Would it be bad to use synthetic at 230k miles?

If you have no oil leaks and not alread burning oil then make the switch! And stay with 5w-30 as its the OEM recommended oil weight. If you burn oil you could try going to a 10w-30 to see if it helps but it may not.

Everyone is probably going to freak out about this but.... I have some people that are swearing by this stuff! One of them is an engine machinist who has been working in a machine shop for 40+ years. He swears his engine is as clean as when it came out of the factory. Another customer of mine who does heavy duty only, farm, tractors, hydraulics, also swears by this. He has it in several of his own cars.

No reason to freak, that's a very high quality engine oil. Excellent additive package and high in zinc, which is likely to be what's keeping the engine so clean.

Yeah, it has to deal with the high pollutant capabilities of diesel, I can kinda see why it is able to keep gasoline engines clean. Not much compared to diesel.

    Exactly.

To be honest, I'm still really surprised that folks still use conventional oil. I don't care either way, it's just surprising. With the data and testing we've done now and and the lower price point than in the past, quality synthetic oil just performs much better than conventional. Flows quicker on cold start up, protects to a much higher temp, etc. I don't want to start a passing match over it... I'm just surprised, is all.

I was thinking about switching over for 1 oil change to see what happens. or who knows, maybe I'll make the permanent switch :)

Seeing the sludge pennzoil left behind is what caused me to switch to AmsOil. All oils are not created equal. This thread https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/im-concerned-yellow-gunk-under-oil-filler-cap.68453/ with pictures of sludge in oil caps and filler necks also shows all oils are not created equal.

Diesel oil should not be used in gasoline engines. Diesel oil has additives designed for diesel engines not gasoline engines. The chemistry of diesel engines is different from gas engines requiring different additives. It's best to use the oil designed for the engine.

    This just isn't accurate.

    From Amsoil's site:
Motorists may favor diesel motor oils over theirgasoline counterparts for a few different reasons. It is safe to use a diesel oil in your gasoline engine, provided the diesel oil meets the appropriate specifications and viscosity requirements of your engine.
(the vast majority of them do, I'd be surprised if you can find one at the parts store that doesn't)

Also, after about 12 years in the wholesale auto parts business, ive learned pretty much that all conventional oil is the same except for what additives they put in it. the additives are there to: 1) change viscosity at different temperatures, 2) introduce dispersants to prevent sludge buildup, and 3) provide antioxidants to prevent rust and metal to metal ware.

So really, no. Delo won't harm your engine. Especially a slow revving high torque engine like our 3.4s.

Only thing is i'm a little worried about testing this theory even though I really want to try it out. :annoyed::confused::mad::(:bananadead:

How is this a Pennzoil problem vs Other non synthetic oils?

Whats wrong with Waxy slick surfaces in engines? Are you confusing waxy surfaces with deposit build up? How do you evaluate it being "break down much faster" ?

Uh Oh that meens my Motorcycle which I use Rotella in is going to blow up any second!!!!1!! And I'm lucky my 16K RPM limited sport bike which I ran T6 in for 20+ thousand miles didnt blow up two!!!!111!!!!

What specific kinds of "additives" are you referring to? Have you looked at a Virgin sample of most diesel oils?
