Don't know what to compare our roads to. The highways seem under constant construction, mostly from growth. Instead of building the highways a little bigger to accommodate growth, they seem to build them just big enough for todays traffic, then rebuild them every 7 years. The town I live in has 900 people and plenty of dirt-ish roads. Wouldn't have it any other way. I've been to the CA a half dozen times, and there is no way I could live there. I hear northern CA is nice.

In all honesty, they both suck.... just in different ways. And since i have lived in both, i am allowed to have an opinion on that. If you'd bothered to read my first post, you'd see i clearly think that CA is definitely the more scenic of the two, just not the better place to live due to stupid state govt regulation which is what the OP's original post is about.... Fees and regulations that are not resident friendly. Thanks for chiming in though, and cute emoji.

North CA is an adult playground, I love it here. Worth the expense (in all forms..).

I changed my auto registration and got rid of the stupid commercial weight fees. I did this in 2013, so I've saved $320 cumulative.

The process was not too bad.

    Long post here about it.

In short you have to fill out DMV form 256, and form 256A, section E., and you will need title, if you don't have title, you'll have to get the finance company to play ball with the DMV after your initial appointment at DMV. The appointment at the DMV is the initial first step.

    No inspection was required.

Please note that this was two full years after the stupid memo about clarifing the policy on changing truck registration.

I re-registered my truck last year as a personal vehicle. No weight fees for me but I've done this before on my 09 and my 11.

My registration is due in December and it's 390 bucks!

    Or maybe it's 340 i forget

My wife's 2012 Civic is 250. That's not much a difference when you consider its a much smaller vehicle

Might have already been mentioned but all truck are registered commercial in CA, unless you install the camper shell, at which time you can apply for regular reg. The deal is you can't remove the shell per the law.

My cousin took his truck into DMV with the shell and changed his registration.

CA commercial fees and taxes are out of this world. Just be happy you're under a certain weight as well.

I think more than half the pick up trucks sold in CA are for just personal use. The state has been taking advantage of truck owners way too long.
