Last night I went to check that my garage door was shut and I heard a humming sound. So I turn the lights on and put on some shoes and sure enough the fuel pump is running in my 05 tacoma. My wife had driven it that day so I thought maybe she forgot to shut the ignition off. Nope, ignition was off. So I turned it on, then off again and it stopped. Started it and it fired up perfectly fine, and when I shut it off it was silent. So I'm thinking it's time to swap out the fuel pump relay. Anyone else experience this?

Check owners manual. Should be a section around page 25 that is titled for your information. I had this same scare and checked manual first. Approximately 5 hours after engine shut off, you may hear a sound coming from under the truck for several minutes. This is the sound of the fuel evaporation leakage check. It is not the fuel pump but sounds very similar. Hope this helps.

Actually, it's a normal pressure test. It's pressurizes the system when the truck is off, and checks for leaks etc. Nothing to do here but let it do it's thing. I believe the trucks temp have to be completely cooled down when it does it, which is why it's often late at night. There is nothing that needs replacing. By starting it, you interrupted the process, so it will just pick another time to check it.

    A few things
This same thing just happened to me yesterday. Was cleaning the wheels and all of a sudden I heard a humming/motor noise coming from something on the back of the gas tank. Glad everything is ok.

2016 does this as well. Good to know that it's normal. Was about 5 hours after driving.

From the 2015 Tacoma owners manual. Likely applies to many if not all 2nd Gen Tacoma's:

Noise from under vehicle after turning off the engine

Approximately five hours after the engine is turned off, you may hear sound
coming from under the vehicle for several minutes. This is the sound of a fuel
evaporation leakage check and, it does not indicate a malfunction.

Hmm My 2017 was doing this last evening. The thing is it seemed to be doing this for quite a while. I could have swore I heard something when I turned truck off say around 5:30 pm. I came back in garage around 9:00 pm and heard it for sure this time. I went and cranked the truck and turned it off and it stopped. This is so weird. If I hear it again I am going to have to see how long this goes on for.

I would not hesitate to get this 2017 truck into a dealer for warranty service.

It's a normal function of the truck.

Maybe the 2017s do it and my 2015 doesn't. I've spend a lot of time around my truck and have never noticed this. Over on the t4r(4runner) forum there's talk about an emissions device back in the vicinity of the fuel tank that wakes up so many hours after the engine has been off. Perhaps he is hearing this.
