Indeed, though the problem with that one was basic stupidity of just pulling harder when the passenger side front wheel was planted like a land anchor. No surprise that they tore the axle off the frame.

Great tip about tow hooks. When I pull disabled vehicles Into the shop, I only use tow hooks. If the vehicle doesn't have hooks, we use human power and push them in

Another tip is don't use your vehicle to pull in reverse. It's hard on the differentials

    LOL it's very hard, yes...

My father grenaded a Dana 44 front axle. Shafts on the passenger side were broken, ring and pinion, and the actual axle housing was bent... it was terrible.

If I'm pulling "in reverse" I usually just hook up a winch and pull with the winch only while in park, with the parking brake set, and if that doesn't keep me from moving, with my bumper planted against a tree to keep me from moving... I think it goes without saying that this isn't really recommended on vehicles without plate bumpers or a winch lol

Keep in mind that tow strap =/ recovery strap. Recovery straps will have a bit of stretch built in to allow for a tug while tow straps minimize stretch and should be drawn taught before getting into it. There's nothing wrong with helping folks out, but heed the advice to find a suitable anchor on their vehicle before trying to get them out.

During the winter I pull people out all the time. I usually keep my maxtrax, shovel, a couple straps and my full recovery box in the back of my truck all winter. Last year there was not one time when I went to go play around on some Forrest service roads after a good snow that I didn't pull some one out. A lot of people are saying not to help strangers and this and that, but there is no way I'm going to drive right passed somebody who is in need. When I was younger and we would go "wheeling" (usually in a 2wd truck) I can't remember how many times some total stranger would end up saving our ass. Thats not to say I haven't left a person or two before because they were total idiots and were a danger to me and my truck.

Snow recovery is tough sometimes. A winch is usually best because most of the time the vehicle your trying to snatch out is iced in. After they get stuck, the exhaust melts the snow a bit and gets water under there, then it cools and freezes. So you usually have to not be too shy about that first tug, and get the thing free, in my experience.

Winch is defiantly easier on the stuck vehicle than taking a run at it with a strap :). And like mentioned in this thread...anchor to a frame point, not a plastic point. Like what these jackasses are doing:

Burried to the axles in sand is a whole lot worse than being burried to the axles in snow.

Snow is easier in terms of resistance and harder in terms of traction.

In college, my roomates and I would lock the truck in 4x4 and drive around by campus looking for girls to rescue in the snow. had alot of fun pulling cars our of snowbanks.

I wouldnt do that again though. Too much liability. Tow straps are for friends only. Tow trucks are for strangers.

If you want to help people out, keep a bag of sand ($5 nicely packaged from home depot) and some shovels in the truck. Unless the vehicle is disabled, that should be enough to recover pretty much anything. If dig + shovel can't get them out, then you definitely don't want to try pulling them out. In addition to helping OTHER people out, that sand bag and shovels can also help YOU out.

I always drive around with 300 lbs of sand in the back of my pickup in the winter. Sand bags are great on ice, help you stay in 2wd. Especially with the Taco, pretty light in the ass-end. The sand bags really help. And if the shit hits the fan, cut one open and start shoveling to get out.

I've pulled out lots of people over the years with the various 4x4 trucks I've owned. Every time I pull out my phone and record them saying they won't hold me responsible for any damages done during the extraction. Only had one guy refuse and I shook his hand and wished him luck.

Sad but true. Welcome to 21st Century USA. You can get sued for helping somebody who is stranded. Thanks lawyers!
