While the D3200 is a newer camera, the D5100 is a better value imo.

I have had a D5100 for over 3 years now. Great camera, especially for $200.

No matter which one they will be a ton better than your phone. I agree with Brent though, second option is my vote.

It worries me that the 5100 is only $200

I'd buy that 3200 in a heart beat. The red is always worth more and it comes with a prime lens which you could sell to me for $50 ;)

Literally knowing nothing about DSLRs, the 3200 will be extremely forgiving.

It even has a dummy mode that will walk you through almost everything but lining up the shot and pressing the shutter

    Its called "guide mode"

You turn the dial to it and it opens a menu for you to select pictures or video.

Then it goes from landscapes to portraits, close ups, fast moving, etc.

Once you select one, it changes all the settings for you. Plus it has a full auto mode where its basically just a big point and shoot.

Then it has manual mode, aperture priority mode, shutter priority mode, movie mode, etc.

Also, the record button is completely away from everything else so you aren't accidentally taking video.

I was originally leaning towards as well.
Yes I'm realizing this haha. I have no idea what FPS really means (frames per second I know) so I'm assuming higher number is better.
iPhone 6s is 12 MP at 2.2 FPS

The 5100 is 16 MP at 4 FPS
The 3200 is 24 MP at 4 FPS
I don't understand why it's so cheap. I also don't freaking understand what is so special about the extra lens! Someone please explain? Is $400 a good deal for that setup.
    I like this.

Ok feel free to tag some more people in here that are into photography. I can't think of anyone's username off the top of my head right now. This is what really confuses me. This article: https://expertphotography.com/which-dslr-camera-should-i-buy-the-answer/

It shows the 3200 as an entry level and the 5100 as an intermediate/nicer model.

Comparing the two on Nikons website I don't understand.
The 3200 has a higher MP (24)... Shouldn't that be better? Both shoot same HD video and same FPS.

Dakota confused. I like the $200 price tag for what should be a nicer camera? Maybe? I dunno.

Lenses cost more than cameras, so that's why an extra lens can be a huge difference in cost.

A good camera with a shitty lens is a shitty camera. Lenses do the work.

Dakota. I had $600 in mine new. and it came with a nearly useless zoom lens. That 50mm prime lens would offset your cost nicely. $450 for that kit is a pretty good deal. you could always haggle with them.

also, more MP is better. higher fps only matters in video, makes them smoother and more fluid.

the nikon d3200 is the best beginner DSLR i could possibly recommend. if you would be interested in something that does awesome video and does decent pictures, go for something like the Cannon T3i/T4i
