While on my quest to "murder out" my Taco with my very rookie knowledge of parts and companies, I was wondering if there are any suggestions on certain companies and certain specifications for lighting assemblies? I'd obviously like to have a dark/smoke housing.

Virtually all aftermarket headlights and taillights are lower quality than OEM, especially from the likes of Spyder and Spec-D. They are the lowest quality there is. The only occasional exception is Depo stuff.

Starting with a Spec-D or Spyder headlight makes a good base to do a projector retrofit with though. I guarantee you will be disappointed with the halos in them if you get it with halos. Barely visible during daytime, and not a uniform ring. Good news is you can replace them with much better ones from TRS, LED Concepts, or Diode Dynamics.

What does murder out mean? I assume you want it blacked out? Either way like snowbird said the aftermarket 'headlights' are not up to oem quality but may be good for a retrofit. I'm no expert but I was in same position like 3mos ago. I was told that the only way to get completely blacked out hl was to do a projector retrofit because you can paint the reflectors and shroud. Theretrofitsource.com has some good info in there learning(?) section and there are numerous member and vendor retrofitting services on here with good pics that do quality work (according to feedback). Check them out I'm pretty sure that's the route you'll want to take. Buying an aftermarket set will be cheaper but it will be.....cheaper.

The only lights worth buying are theretrofitsource.com parts either built by yourself or hand built by a few people on this forum if you don't want to have to buy lights again. You could buy factory made lights but they're just not the same and don't last as long or look as good. With hand built ones you can choose or build whatever combination you want. IMHO!
