I had an 06 before this. I signed it over to my brother who was in a tight spot. 160k and not an issue.

Look this is a nice truck, probably the best midsize out there. It has a wonderful interior, it's excellent OR and gets great mpg.

But, the trans sucks. It isn't nearly refined to the level of any vehicle I've driven. It just isn't. I travel some and get a wide variety of rentals. All of them shift quicker and more deterministic than the trans in my truck.

Again, this is a great truck, it just has some quirks. That seems fair enough to talk about.

LED tall lights, locking gas cap, light paint work, detailing, and I just started a custom stereo install.
I have a Gen 2 TRD. I've owned this truck for only 3 months, but it quickly became apparent that a Tacoma(s) of some sort will be in my driveway until the day I die. Excellent rigs, well built, and more solid as compared to Chevy, Dodge, or Ford. Plus there are literally thousands of aftermarket custom applications that will make your rig unique. I live in Portland, and this is easliy the most popular truck up here for all the camping, hunting, fishing, off-roaring enthusiasts.

But is sounds like you'd be better suited in a Chevy Colorado...like my Mother.

Let me first preface this with...I do not currently own a Tacoma, and I have never driven one as of yet. My intention on this board was to do research before making any decisions on whether to purchase one, what model, etc. I've driven Toyotas for the last 10 years - 2 Highlanders and I'm on my second RAV4 ('15 XLE) - so I know a little something about Toyota quality.

This past August I went up to a middle aged guy sitting in a white '16 TRD Sport DCSB in a mall parking area and asked him how he liked his Tacoma. He said he really liked it. When I asked him how it shifted he said he noticed a lag. I asked about vibrations and he said he felt 'something'. I told him about the TSB for the lag and he said he never heard of it. Whether he followed up on it or not I don't know. BTW, I never told him about this board, I don't think he would've understood how to use it.

There are a lot of people out there that don't have a clue about what's going on in the auto/truck industry today. Most of them feel that as long as their vehicle(s) run good then everything must be normal and they're OK with it regardless of the auto maker.

    It's all a moot point. Op isn't going to find a '16 for $30K.

    Very true.

I dropped my truck off at the dealer last Friday morning since I was going to be out of town for the weekend. When I called the service advisor Monday he told me they did the TSB on it. I picked it Monday afternoon and drove approx 20 miles home. It drives like a different truck now.

OK. So everyone that test drove the truck and it shifted sharply and had plenty of low end torque with no sluggishness or "erratic behavior" but then it turned into a piece of crap after signing the contract  are hereby permitted to gripe incessantly. So let it be written, so let it be done.

I had a jeep liberty 2008 before my 17 taco.

Same drivetrain has a Dakota. People complaining about gutless engine and weird transmission around there part have no clue how horrible the jeep was compared to the Taco. They also seem to forget where is the power band on the Taco and that more gear means more shifting.

It's a more modern truck, I understand truck people are old school but whatever, wait until 4 gen and the 3rd one will be considered the best truck ever created by their standard.

Fortunately, these forums exist where you can get a 2nd opinion on a decision you are trying to make. Not only that, you can find out if others out there are having the same issues and figure out how to deal with those issues.

The reality is this forum represents a small sample of all the Tacoma's out on the road. So basing your decision on a such a small sample will not give you an accurate gauge on what issues you will potentially experience. This can be said about all vehicles on the road.

My made in Mexico 16' Tacoma has over 9k miles. I haven't had any issues with it or TSB's done. I've wheeled it many times, crawled over rocks, hauled motorcycles, towed a Toyota Highlander and even got it stuck in a sand dune once.

It has performed as I expected since day 1.

I've had my truck for 8months, 27k miles. I feel like I just broke in the transmission. This baby glides on the freeway.
It was a little jerky at first. I felt like the gears would grab hard between shifts. Now it's smooth as butter.
Maybe people aren't driving them enough.
First new Toyota that my family has bought. All of our other cars, all Toyota, where used.
