Definitely the smog pump popping. The rub I am not sure sounds like a belt until the engine warms up. But will look into the mod may fix the problem.
4.0L 4WD with towing package. Hasn't let me down yet. My 2007 had a loud knocking noise until warm up in -20 degree temps. Didn't make the noise when it was warm above 0. Smog pump may have been the problem then too. Had 190000 miles on it. Bought this one to tow my RV into retirement. So will last until I have one foot on a banana peel and the other in the grave. :)

    Hello
No,is your belt noise like baby goat syndrome vids?
I don't consider the smog pump abnormal at all it's a pump, doesn't bother me a bit.
But do you have that pulsing whine sound after every start that engine has been allows to reach ambient temp. It's been flagged as piston slap, which using just plain logic I agree it's the most likely culprit . Mine 95% goes away when engine reaches full operating temp. I've never owned a vehicle with piston slap and don't like it but ill see what happens.
