X2. If you want automatic then stick to the iPhone :cookiemonster:

You can use aperture and shutter priorities modes to get yourself used to seeing how all the variables play together. ISO/aperture/shutter speed.

x2 on shooting in RAW format.

I edit nearly all my pictures anyways, and it only takes a couple more seconds each to convert the RAW file to a JPEG after editing.

Does the editing software convert? Or just when you save it after editing choose jpeg?

    Forgot about lightroom.
I shoot in aperture priority most of the time. I set the iso and the white balance, then the mess with the aperture

You save it as a jpeg when done. Then it flattens it without loosing any quality

    Agree
    Agree
Nope. But I would like to keep it to either Nikon or Cannon
    Let's see it....
That's the plan. I want to learn this stuff.
A zoom that gets me over 100? I don't think I need a super wide lens...
So much to learn. For instance what does having a 30 second shutter do?
Well I got that part down now lol
    Flattens it?

30 second shutter is for extreme low light (taking pictures of stars from a tripod) or doing light painting:

You do want a wider lens. Maybe not super wide but we take more close pictures rather than far away ones. On a trail you want a wide lens.
I have 2, a wider one for up close and a telephoto for far away.

100 meaning mm. My first lens was an 18-135. Worked great on the 60d.

You'll use the zoom more than you think even on the trail.

    Woah, cool!
    Noted.
Won't that mess up the normal 4:3 landscape shape or whatever? How do you know all this I feel like I've never seen you with a DSLR ever haha. Break that thing out more often.
Oooooh. Damn and standard ones only go to 55 mm?

Full frame dslr. It's more $ but well worth it if photography is what you're into.

Having owned both canon and Nikon, I decided on canon. The menu system was easier to navigate and make changes. The canon lens were cheaper, and I couldn't get used to the way Nikon lenses zoomed. Seemed backwards.

I hadn't brought it out often because it was super unreliable, but I have since fixed it and am starting to use it more.
Let me rephrase that, you don't want a wide angle lens that makes it look like your in a fish bowl (unless you want that kind of picture) but rather a lens for close up pictures. I don't know specific numbers like Marc and Mason but I guess one for normal ranges.

I need one of those 18-55 is just not enough.

Th 55-200 is too much unless doing long landscape shots

The kit lens (the one most commonly sold with the camera is an 18-55) but there are literally enough different lenses to make your head explode

Well currently I'm a complete novice and don't know what I want. What Cannon would you recommend to me? Trying to find used and stay under $400.
    Gotcha? I think...
Yep that's what it's doing currently :violent:
