I happen to believe the owner's manual and try to use the top tier gas that it recommends. My issue is that I have only seen one station (Costco) that has a top-tier sticker on the pump. The people working at other top-tier stations listed on the top-tier website know nothing about what top tier gas is. You would think they would be bragging about it since it adds cost to the gasoline. Anyway...I use it.

I don't go out of my way to look for the top tier thing; it's a gasoline additive package, and your truck won't blow up if you use a different brand.

I use Costco, Sams, and QuikTrip primarily. I will use RaceTrac or others as needed.

I group this along with nitrogen filled tires. It's a marketing gimmick.

Tacomas are sold all over the world. Some third world countries have no top tier gas and the trucks run just fine.

I prefer my tires filled with a nitrogen/oxygen mix at roughly a 78%/21% ratio.

I tried a couple of tanks of 91/93 just for the hell of it. Absolutely no difference at all.

Right, the only difference was your wallet was lighter.

Using a higher octane than what's needed to prevent knocking/pinging is a waste of money. All the higher octane does is retard detonation in higher compression motors. Zero effect in motors designed to use 87 octane.

Yeah only for the driver though, after it's parked for the night.

No more than 15% ethanol goes into the truck per the owners manual.

I try to use top tier gas whenever I can because that's what the manual recommends. When I need fuel but top tier isn't available, I use the "normal" stuff.

When you say "top tier", are you referring to the octane level?

Huh, could have sworn King Soopers (Kroger) was on that list, that's where I usually fill up. Guess I'll see what else is convenient.

Lots of confusion in this thread. Top Tier is not the same thing as octane level. Top Tier is not a synonym for premium.

I do 95% of my fill-ups at QuikTrip, mostly because they are by far the best gas station chain I've seen. Consistently clean, fast, have good snacks (freshly cooked), and have excellent employees.

The fact that their gas is rated top tier is a bonus.

I get that now, the list is pretty extensive. I don't see many gas stations that are not a shell, mobile, exxon, BP, 76, citgo, cheveron.....basically all it's saying is don't buy a no name brand gas. That's fairly obvious.

I agree that the Top Tier marketing gimmick is a rip off for the fuel blenders. However it is pretty clear that the automatic injector cleaning function isn't going to work properly without enough detergents in your gasoline. I usually fill up at a Mobil near my work that is the same price as everywhere else except Costco and Sam's. Perhaps there are some independent labs doing additive tests but since it is the easiest way I just use Gas Buddy to identify top tier stations and fill up there. But I will use a non top tier station in a pinch.

I use 87 octane as recommended in the owner's manual. I don't think it is worthwhile to use a higher rating.

Chevron 87 octane here with no issues.

Do a little research on Direct injection and top tier gas. You will be using top tier from then on .
