*THE RTT Owners Thread (With BS)*

Yeah after looking at those hitch mounts they would eat up all my ground clearance so I wouldn't really be gaining anything over the trailer. The main appeal of putting the bike in the bed is being able to hit the trails with it. And not having to leave it and the trailer cabled to a tree somewhere or go back to pick it up.

 

We're getting ready to hit the mountains of TN in our new RTT in another week. Temps is hovering around 40*.

 

Why not on the cab?

 

Really happy with my Tepui. Big fan of the functionality of the RTTs.

 

Nice. Which awning you got there? Need to start dropping hits around the wife for xmas.

 

I know how it is I currently have the tepui awning. Bought both the awning and tent from REI.

All stored away for winter, gonna throw a tarp over it

 

Took mine off and left it at my buddies, basically done for the year but I can just snag it anytime I need it. Did notice a little bit better mpg without it tho. But again it's a truck so who cares

 

Can anybody tell me if these t-slot nuts will work in the RTT rails?

I'm not sure how many different sizes there are of these things.

Eh. Nevermind. They obviously won't fit.

Has anybody taken off the stock RTT rails and put on Tacoma bed rails - and then used t-slot nuts to bolt up into. When the bolts hang down from the RTT rails it makes it pain to put on the truck. As well as store in my garage.

Grouse hunting in northern Minnesota. On a spur road of the rapid river trail.

 

Dude there were SO many grouse hunters out this past weekend. 2/3 of the trails in CNF were blocked by people so they could walk them.

I need some words of wisdom here.

I have gone through a solid 300+ pages in this thread out of 490, and yes I understand this question has been asked previously though after a few specific replies the conversation wonders off into other specifics in this thread, so bringing the question back up fresh for all.

I have seen what seems to be a hand full of people currently using this setup, however all signs pointing towards not a good idea...

Here is my setup, basically if anyone wants to chime in and either hype me up or talk me out of it, thanks ahead of time and I take all your inputs with grains of salt lol

2012 dcsb about to embark on a two week 6k mile road trip
Tepui Ayer rtt
2x yakima round bars with control towers on yakima tracks
snugtop cap


the tent weighs in at 125# Im around 160# mg gf is around 115# = 400#
Snugtop via a phone call says my cap is rated for 200#
Yakima via a phone call says my round bar setup is rated for 165#


I understand the difference between static and dynamic, however both vendors has mentioned their dynamic ratings being their static ratings and that they do not text static figures.

Am I bat shit crazy for thinking this will be a smart idea? Clearly my frontrunner cab rack is more suitable for the weight I imagine, though I really rather have the rtt mounted on the cap..


Thankfully we have forums for crazy people like me to talk out loud... enough of running ideas within my own head, people looking at me all funny.

and one more question for all who are running an RTT on a front runner slimline 2 rack, are you using the tall or regular height front runner rtt mount kits??

 

90% it will be a ton of pavement pounding, and maybe some 10% fire service road style driving none paved roads.

As I do agree the front runner is more suitable for the weight, I kinda liked the rack open for storage and having the raised rack acting as a sort of wind damn for the block shape that is the rtt


I understand a lot of vendors use very conservative ratings being that people are silly and do not listen...
It kinda would be nice if they gave you an actual real time figure... But clearly people will push those limits regardless...
