Mine looked like that but a little worse, Toyota put new ones in under my warranty.

From what I've seen, It's normal for second gen to do that. I think mine started at 50K and I have about 70K on it now.

The boots are super soft and stretchy, are sealed and non serviceable, and despite the ugly appearance, the boot is doing its job of keeping dust and debris out. My opinion is based on others reports in the long standing DIY LBJ replacement thread.

Last I had heard, Toyota really screwed 2nd gen owners with the LBJs...they do not sell the ball joint by itself, and force you to buy the entire LCA, which is $300+ a side. I really hope I'm wrong because mine is leaking too and will eventually need replacing.

This is true, but the aftermarket has responded. And by the time the LBJ needs to be serviced, you'll need bushings too probably.

This last summer I finished rebuilding some LCA's for my truck.

How are the Moogs holding up? Anything bad showing itself yet? I've heard the Moogs are pretty good, I'm just always weary of installing non OEM parts.

The LCA is not installed yet, should go into truck very soon though. There are good reports from the moog LBJ from other members in the forum. Thankfully, it's a made-in-U.S.A. part. :)

Did you re-use the factory cover/boot? Looking at Rock Auto, it doesnt seem like it comes with a boot.

What happened was that Moog redesigned their dust boot to be very small and integrated tightly with the ball joint stud.

    Here is a comparative photo:

What I did was steal a dust boot from the older Moog ball joints and put them on the newer ball joint for two layers of protection.

Genius! Can you buy the dust boot by itself?
