Head gasket failure on 4.0 Toyota engines

How many of you have had head gasket failure on your 2005 or earlier 4.0 engine.

I have been a loyal Toyota sense 1972 and have owned 25 plus Toyotas. The head gaskets on my 2005 Tacoma failed at 139000 miles. I got a case number, furnished Toyota with serial numbers on many of my Toyotas. They said no help at all. What's with Toyota???

If you or any one you know has had a head gasket failure on their 4.0 engine, notify and bitch to Toyota. They know they have a problem as the corrected the problem in 2006 with no failure after that.

 

It's pretty rare from what I've seen on here. Bummer you were one of the few.

 

I understand a certain level of bitching to Toyota, but things are getting crazy around here. Everyone with a problem wants toyota to start a program to fix it for free. I understand that is early for a head gasket to go out, but old vehicles break down. Think of all the other things you would have fixed on a domestic by now.

 

All the "free" fixes get paid for by future model buyers (which may be you down the road). Nothing is free.

 

It's only 103,000 miles out of warranty.

They should pay.

 

Your truck is 11 years old with nearly 140k on... why is Toyota responsible?

 

Blew the engine (heads) at 83, 000 kms (51k miles) on a 2008 in 2012.

No help.

Replaced motor with a 143 km (89 k miles) and got ful trade value. Dealer put the truck on their lot as a fully warrantied vehicle to 100,000 kms.

I walked away with a new truck for the same payments (+ 2 years) with 7 years/160,000 km warranty bumper to bumper. 5k off sticker.

I helped myself.

 

You do realize the year is almost 2017, right?

I had early head gasket symptoms at 140k and sure enough it was toast. $3k with new radiator, new water pump etc. whoever told you the problem stopped in 2006 is lying to you, I know someone with an 09' having the same prob right now. It's a very common prob with these motors when hey get into higher digits.

 

Interesting that it doesn't show up on here often. Not being sarcastic, I just rarely see anyone posting about it.

 

I wonder how many auto mfgs. would pay for a new head gasket on any of their 12 yr. old vehicles with nearly 140K on the clock?

 

ALOT OF 2005's have had head gasket failure. Some early 2006's... like mine still had old head gasket! Just spent almost $4,000 getting it fixed! I agree, if yours fails... CALL AND COMPLAIN!

Symptoms are...

Coolant level dropping
Water swishing sound from under dash when you first start the truck
Random mis-fires on cylinder 5 and/or 6
Abnormal moisture/water dripping from exhaust

Dealership did pressure testing and found no problems, me and a friend with a shop diagnosed it. I went back to the dealership and asked to have head gaskets changed. They said I did not need to have them changed because their tested did not show any issues. Upon removing the heads... gaskets were blown! I used the dealership for 2 reasons...

1. Warranty
2. I know one day there will be a recall and I have a receipt!

(when I first called to complain about factory defect the rep told me if i do get it fixed TO MAKE SURE I KEEP my receipt. The way she said it was like, ya they know there is a problem and something is on the horrizon)

 

I had to have mine done. I had about an 1/8 spot in the gasket that was giving me an issue. I took it into the dealer and they ran a test and said it checked out fine, The same day I took it to a local shop and they did a test to check for exhaust coming back thru the coolant overflow and there was. The local shop did the work and found the bad spot. I spoke to my dealer and they told me to keep the receipt for the work due to Toyota knowing that there is an issue with most of the 2005 vehicles. If they issue a recall great and if they don't, No Worries. All I care is that it was caught in time and it got fixed.

 

12 years and 140,000 miles.
Most cars don't last HALF that long.
Hire a mechanic (not a dealer, a MECHANIC) to do a head gasket job on it.

 

I had an '89 Toyota, 3.0L engine truck with 98K. It was four years old. Toyota paid for the whole repair for the blown head gasket. Toyota ain't what it used to be!!!

 

4 years is still young.
This guy is talking about an engine that is TWELVE years old.

 

Entitlement generation: An group that feels a 12 year old engine with 139,000 miles on it should be repaired for free.

 

Wait, was/is there a recall for this? I have an 05 with just under 80k. I don't have any issues yet, but just wanting to know if there's a [Toyota-initiated] fix for it that I should be aware of.

 

there's plenty of HG failure posts here. thats how i diagnosed mine. a cyl 6 misfire code lead me to HG replacement just a couple of months ago, on my 11 year old 140K mile 2005 4.0L...
i had purchased a warranty with my used tacoma when i bought it 2 yrs ago; but the dealer said my warranty does not cover seals and gaskets and they wanted over $4k to replace the HG and a catalytic converter. after some discussion and persuasion i convinced them to figure out a way to get it covered. and they did. not the catalytic converter, but they did replace the HG for a $100 deductible. i wasn't rude or nasty or stubborn- i simply asked them to try harder, to go to bat for me, and to just figure it out. i imagine what the dealer did was claim something else that was covered, like a cracked head, with the warranty company. this way, their customer gets satisfied (which i am) and they get paid. win win... i dont FEEL entitled, but maybe i should...
