With a Detroit locker you need to have the same dia tire on both sides plus identical air pressure . having 3-5lbs difference in tire pressure can make for a ill handling ride and why you need to check and adjust air press constantly or when you start noticing handling issues

My Camaro I've been driving it on the street for 10 years with a Eaton posi with 800lbs pre load springs . No ill handling whatsover . I just recently swapped to a spool and drag Radials and again no ill handling whatsover

Do you wait for the locker to try engage before releasing the clutch?
Sounds like it's going into failsafe, having to turn the ignition off and on.

Have to disagree with you at least partially on this, had an auto-locker in the rear of my last Tacoma and it worked great off-road. Selectable is far more convenient but the auto locker did it's job. On road it was fine too but I live in a dry climate, they can definitley get squirrelly in slippery conditions daily driving.

Maybe in dry climates they're fine.
But when it comes to snow hell no.
I'd rather have an open diff with no locker at all.

They locker has nothing to do with the clutch. They are not related whatsoever, and you don't need to depress the clutch to engage it. All that's required is you are in 4lo.

    It's in the owner's manual...:notsure:
If the clutch has a interlock with the 4wd ecu, which I'm 99% it does, it matters.

for the 3rd gen manual you have to press the clutch
probably some safety feature so you aren't engaged in a gear or anything

All the clutch does is couple the engine to the driveline. The elocker is inside the rear diff (well not the motor but let's not get technical...).To engage the elocker all you need is to be in 4lo, be stopped or moving less than like 5mph iirc, and hit the button. You may have to turn left/right or rock back and forth to get it to engage.

    maybe try a 3rd gen?
Probably something in the ECU that if the clutch isn't pressed, wont turn on.
Just like how with the 2nd there was the locker anytime mod, no one has figured out how to do it on the 3rd gen yet.

Its different from the previous years. So ya, according to the manual and all the manual owners on here, you do need to pressed the clutch for it.

Edit, I'll eat crap here. Just looked at the 3rd gen owner's manual and you apparently do indeed need to depress the clutch which makes zero sense.

This is weird too because my locker will not engage (light will not go solid it just flashes) while holding in the clutch I sat there for over a min and the light just flashes. I have to release the clutch and start moving and then it might lock in. Definitely not how its explained in the owners manual. But it also will not engage if I push the button while moving with the clutch out, then it flashes and beeps at me. Ugh I wish they had it defined properly in the owners manual so I know it's not broken. I tried the locker in someone's automatic 4Runner you put it in N and you push the button and it's in, that simple.

Try pushing the clutch ALL the way down.... my 4w-lo is finicky about that .... I don't have the e-locker but could be sensitive about the clutch position. Maybe the dealer can adjust the sensor position for you??

I got the same advice when I had issues going into and out of 4wd-lo... just clutch ALL the way to the floor and that fixed my problem.
