Im talking km and they said engone oil. It was weird to me cause the manual says 8000 and i tries explaining the diff noise first that was the main issue i have and oil was no where im my worry books. But to her i really dont need to worry about the oil and get my tires rotates and check alignment and top up fluids is all.

Notice while driving my dads 2011 Tundra i was using to move into a new house this weekend that it makes the same howl right at 50-55mph too. Its a little louder on his truck but that may be from having 40k instead of the 2500 miles that my truck has. But it also does make me wonder if this has been a thing with toyota trucks for a while and no one really noticed or complained much online. That or my dads tundra needs a new diff at 40k

I think it's a pretty common thing, especially with these trucks. With all of the modding that folks do it would be easy to cover up the noise and never really notice it. I put one size bigger and slightly more aggressive tires on my truck, everything else stock, and the howl is much less noticeable than it was before.

I mentioned the howl at my first service. They drove it and immediately said it was a bad rear diff so they replaced it the next day! And.....it's still there, and maybe a slight howl at 30mpg now (yes LCAs are already plugged). So they took the truck back and tried to isolate the noise to the transmission or transfer case and even brought a regional engineer out. And then they said it was normal. For now. My service advisor thinks something isn't quite right but his hands are tied with Toyota saying it's "normal". Hopefully a TSB comes out for this.

At least I already got the 8 yr/125k platinum warranty from corporate for the low ATF issue.

So with all these reported vehicles impacted, has anyone actually got a video clip of what the noise sounds like? I'm kind of curious to know how bad this sound is that's causing so many folks to go through warranty replacements that just do the same.

I'm waiting on a replacement transfer case as we speak. The tech told me that my rear diff was quiet, and that the noise was coming from the T-Case output shaft bearing. Time will tell.

I'm getting close to buying a 17 Taco DCOR Auto, but I'm hearing and reading all these threads about water leaks, diff noise, etc and it's kinda concerning. It will be my first Toyota and I don't want a bad experience right out the door.

Now I know Tacomas hold value and are a good brand but maybe I should hold off for a few months so the initial issues get locked down......:/

Buy it, it comes with a warranty if you have any problems.

This is the second new 4x4 I've owned that has quirks. My Tacoma has a slight noise coming from the rear differential or somewhere underneath the truck when I am driving between 55 and 65 miles per hour. It's not terribly loud and hasn't gotten any noisier, but I only have 4500 miles on the odometer. There is a noise coming from the LCA on a windy day, but I do not find it annoying.

I moved from a 2011 Wrangler 4 door to the Tacoma and the Wrangler was not without it's quirks. If you ran OEM recommended weight motor oil, it consumed oil. I had to run 10w30 to stop the consumption. The steering was not as precise as the Tacoma and it did not have the power my Tacoma does. The brakes were not very good from the first day I drove it off the lot.

I looked at GM trucks, both Chevy and GMC, before buying my Tacoma. They were less expensive, but they had bigger issues, so I steered clear of them.

With all the complaints I see on the internet, I expect to see a Tacoma completely engulfed in flames every time I leave the house and drive into town. That is not the case in my area.

I really enjoy driving my Tacoma, and the fact that it is peppier, handles better, has more cargo room and get's better gas mileage than my Wrangler. Find a good dealership you can trust and test drive a Tacoma before counting it out.

I've started to consider the diff howl a non-issue. I don't think we've seen any fail as a result of this noise, and supposedly most of the diffs that were replaced were in spec, so I really wouldn't let this keep you from buying a Tacoma. If there are problems with them, I'm sure they will start to show up before most people hit their 60k powertrain warranty limit. Sure its annoying, but put some more aggressive tires on there and you hardly notice it. Really the only thing I have seen that concerns me is the CPS failures, but its my understanding that those were sorted out by late 2016, so the 2017s should be good to go.

    I say go for it!

You may very well be right, but I plan to keep my rig for the long haul. If my issue turns out to be a bearing in the T-Case as the tech suspects, I would not want to be paying for the repair out of pocket should it decide to grenade down the road. Labour alone is 8hrs to get the unit swapped. I just can't ignore that noise, it signals trouble to me (and it's too obvious to miss in my truck, I didn't read a thread and then go looking for it).

Seems like you have a separate issue altogether. I know in my case, as well as others in this thread, the noise was isolated to the rear diff by running the truck on a lift - and was again verified after it was replaced. I would be just as concerned as you if they had told me the noise was coming from the transfer case.

I definitely think folks with the diff noise should have it documented in case problems do arise in the future, as suggested numerous times throughout this thread, but until we start seeing some failures or other issues arise due to the noise, I just don't think this is a reason to keep people from buying this truck. It seems like the couple of failures we have seen gave people some warning with grinding and/or leaking/sweating seals prior to failure - none of which I have experienced. I also expressed my concern about issues arising after the warranty period, and my case manager at Corporate told me that Toyota is typically good about standing behind documented issues that end up causing failures after the warranty period. He was probably just trying to get me off the phone, but hopefully we don't have to find out if its true!
