New Member Radio Communications Questions

Hey Fellas,
So I am part of a "prepper" community down here and I am looking for info on either CB or mobile HAM radios. Idk what will have the best range. The only info I can find is other forums and everyone says something different. I've never messed with either before so I am trying to learn all I can before I decide what to get. My biggest concern is range. On a side note, why do antennas have to be so big? Can't emergency vehicles communicate from across the city and theirstate aren't very big. Or are they just set up on repeaters?

 

Welcome. Ham radio is great for long range. You have to have a license to operate in ham bands though. For emergency and prep type stuff, VHF all day.
